WE are under a storm watch advisory this morning. A Colorado Clipper is due to go through beginning Tuesday night and tapering off on Thursday with a possible 15 to 30 cm/6 to 12 in of snow being dumped. Joy of joys, a Polar Vortex is expected to drop down behind the storm bringing very cold arctic air with it. Should make for an interesting mid week.

Is this unexpected or usual this time of year?

The Colorado Clipper is not that unusual but a Polar Vortex outfall from the arctic is a bit unusual in that it is earlier than normal particularly if it turns out to be a particular kind of one. Should it be that one, it would be the earliest on record. That kind of severe one can easily extend down into the US. You have not lived till you have had your water line to your house freeze and ours are buried 6 ft/180 cm under ground.

And Mrs Vac called me old, senile and daft

Her. 'will you go and buy my sister some little bits for Christmas, she likes Schwarzkopf'.

She told me the road where I could find the shop. I walked along and found a ladies hairdresser with a neon sign saying Schwarzkopf. I went inside and asked if I could have a selection of their products, the look on their faces was 'someone has been on the Christmas sherry'. Took a bagful of product home to be met with, 'what the hell is this'.

Her: 'I said Swarovski, she collects the little crystal animals'

The pottery store was next door to the hairdressers.

Anyone want some shiny gorgeous hair in time for Christmas?

Nasty bout of toothache lately. On Sunday the pain eventually forced me to seek help via NHS111 and I attended the dental hospital in Chalmers St., Edinburgh. They merely packed a cavity they located with a temporary filling substance.

A follow up emergency appointment with my own dentist in a neighbouring town resulted in an X-Ray which showed an infection under said cavity. Antibiotics were prescribed and I’m going back in a week to see what’s what. Either root canal or extraction. The tooth is going black and it’s in the lower left rear so I’ll probably opt for extraction but I may not have a choice. Looks the bugger will be coming out one way or another.

I really should take better care of my teeth. Annoyed at myself and still have a bit of pain but yon packing has helped as do the painkillers. God, I ruddy detest toothache!

As predicted, the first winter storm of the season started during the night, will continue through the day and taper off by Thursday. I would not want to be on the TransCanada Highway anywhere from eastern Ontario to the Rockies in the west. Terrible conditions in the west yesterday and now in the east. Add to that the huge increase in transport trucks over the last few years with poorly trained drivers and suspect equipment you run the gauntlet on the roads with them. Personally I'd stay home or if caught on the road pull over and get a room for a few days until the storm clears and the road conditions improve. Driving in the city is not going to be much joy as a lot of drivers will be driving like it still is summer by following too close and speeding. It takes a bit for the light bulb to come on and for some it never does to drive according to conditions. Should be fun to watch from the sidelines.

The standard of driving in bad weather conditions can be shocking. I have heard of people going out in snow blizzards just to test their rally driving skills or booting their rear wheel drive cars on summer tyres thinking that the spinning rear wheels will get them there eventually.

Yes, all that and more stupid stunts. Little things can trip you up too like the difference in which way to turn the front wheels depending on if you have a front or rear wheel drive when getting into a skid. At other times I turn off traction control feature on my all wheel drive car if it is slowing me down getting out of somewhere.
