What made your day a crap one?

Looks like our fridge freezer is dying and will need replacement. As it’s part of a fitted kitchen, sorting it will be a pain, not to mention expensive.

I suppose I shouldn’t moan too much, it has lasted nearly 20 years but it’s a cost we don’t need.

steve :(
You never know when you really need a fridge freezer, regardless of the cost you don’t need in your house,

I know what you mean about the fitted kitchen problem Steve. They look lovely until something needs a swap out. We had problems with our washer dryer and after the call out it wouldn't fit back into its slot. Pain in the bottom 🙄

Good luck getting it sorted 🙏 Hope you get a good swap and a good price.

I have called someone who does kitchen appliance stuff for me for advice on your behalf. The most common issue on fridge freezers is the compressor which is not a DIY repair and may even need attention by a gas certified engineer (which he isn't) but the cost is £400+ which is well on the way to a new fridge freezer. He also made the point that new fridge freezers are much more efficient than a 20 year old model. I asked him if there was a brand that he could recommend and his only comment was not Flavia or Beko.

The installation process might not be as big a pain as you fear. I had to replace a dishwasher in a fitted kitchen and the seller treated this as normal practice with standard sizing of most appliances. The retailer that I use is selling a Bosch fridge freezer at £699 or a Hisense at £399, fitted and working.

Clean the fan and coils, it'll be fine.

The risk of taking out a Warranty after the event is substantial. If the claim is reported soon after the start you can expect an investigation, the insurers are not fools. In the event that the fraud is proven then the Police could become involved and also your name will go on a blacklist making other insurances, car and home for example, difficult at best.

A defending solicitor can charge more than the cost of a new fridge freezer, mine charges a retainer on any new case of £900 followed by £200 an hour (or part) for any work that they do.

Be very careful about home warranty policy, they'll charge you interested, and 12 months fees or longer.

Read the fine print, before, you sign any bull 💩 document. Always keep a record, in case you need to see a solicitor.
I've had American Home Shield for 15 years and have used it to repair and/replace appliances, HVAC systems. There is no indebtedness. It's a policy just like your home and property insurance.

I wasn't suggesting anything dishonest, but at this point the appliance is still working and could work for some time.

For example, my garage refrigerator stopped working and I knew not to file a claim since the policy only cover inside units. On a side note, what I did discover is that "garage ready" units are available with additional insulation.

Your system may be different to ours but taking out insurance only when you know of a problem could be regarded as fraud and comparable to buying insurance for vets fees after you know that your dog is ill or buying boat insurance because you have been told that a bad storm is coming, even buying car insurance after an accident has occurred. I have heard reports of people buying insurance on jewellery after it has been lost.

The point is that a claim soon after a policy has started would mean that Steve could find himself in more trouble than it is worth.

I understand the point you are trying to make, but a home warrantee policy can be a good thing to have in place regardless of what is going on at the moment.

The trouble with advice on insurance and insurance claims is that the rules and application of those rules varies greatly depending on where you live.
