The black bears are at it again with many close encounters in residential areas in our part of the country. The drive is on to fatten up before denning up for the winter. This one was a little too close for the couple involved.

I have heard or read many stories of bear encounters INSIDE people's homes this season. Far more than I recall ever before. Maybe it's just my imagination or just a reflection of my own lack of awareness. But there does seem to be an uptick. I wonder if the overall bear population has grown which only would contribute to increased numbers of bear and human encounters. Regardless of the reason, there have always been bear sightings in my area and lately we have been hearing about at least one black bear wandering around my town each of the last 5 to 10 years. I live in densely populated northern NJ. My home is about 1/4 mile from a 2,000+ acre park/reservation. Even thought I am only about a half hour drive from Manhattan, there is an abundant amount of wildlife here. Besides bears we have the usual suspects such as chipmunks, squirrels, deer, raccoons, opossum, rabbits, red fox, coyotes. We now seem to have nesting bald eagles as well. I have often seen different types of hawks. I am no longer working and have found that I am becoming more and more nocturnal. Playing in a band which rehearses in the evenings has me coming home fairly late. Often I come home hungry and end up stopping to pick some fast food up. I get home and have to unload the car of my drum gear, alone. And I live alone as well. And my neighbors all seem to be fast asleep fairly early. So, I have become much more vigilant of paying attention to my surroundings and am basically on the lookout for a bear hiding behind large shrubs or just walking along. The problems typically occur when you surprise them. I realize they are ravenous before they start their hibernation so they will often end up rummaging through poorly secured garbage cans. Here it is 2:23AM and as usual, I'm wide awake. Had a rehearsal tonight but fortunately didn't see a bear while I was unloading. I figure it's only a matter of time before I have at least a sighting of my own, if not an encounter. Stay safe out there.

Spent a lot of this afternoon taking down a bamboo bush and attempting to dig it out. Managed to remove three fair sized root boles but still have the vast majority to shift. However, I have loosened the earth around it a fair amount and exposed a bit of root.

Mind you, it was bloody knackering!
