Pass Around Timeless Razors Pass Around

I've got a good idea of what seems to work for me with this set and for some cruel reason the scalloped just doesn't work for me. It's such a beautiful looking design and I've no idea but whenever I've used the scalloped in whatever configuration it's been a bit on the uncomfortable side for my liking. Next up will be the OC and then then I'll try the scalloped head with the SB for my sins since that seems like my favourite base plate.

What are your current three favourite DE razors?

Penultimate shave with the Timeless before posting out first thing on Monday morning. The OC with the smooth top cap was very smooth and provided a very close shave if a wee bit bitey on my neck but I seem to have forgotten how to shave my neck of late for some reason. Looking forward to what was my favoured base plate with the shorter handle on Sunday, the humble bumble straight bar but it will be with the scalloped head for its last opportunity at redemption.

The Timeless was posted off to Andreas this morning but not before my last shave last night. I used the long handle , scalloped top cap and the straight bar and it was my most enjoyable shave to date with it. It still wasn't as kind as other razors on my neck but what did I expect with all the chopping and changing through the 2 week period. I actually forgot to take a SOTD pic and only realised when it was packed up so no pic this time. It was a great experience to try all the different bits and pieces before I possibly bought. As said by everyone, the built quality and aesthetics are first class but with a Wolfman (WR-1 & WR-3 handles and a SB and OC base plate combo) on the way at some point soon I will wait and see how they compare as people who have both find them very similar.
So all that's left to do is thank everyone who were involved in bringing this about and I look forward to hearing everyone else's thoughts. Cheers guys!

The Timeless has arrived safely. First impressions and initial thoughts to follow.
I don't really need a shave today (Bunny V3 with NOS Twin blade yesterday.. enough said), but I might have a go anyway.
Mild base plate maybe.

Initial thoughts before actually receiving the razor

This should be interesting
I have deliberately ignored this thread since reluctantly joining the list, so if I voice any opinions that have already been endlessly regurgitated - that's why.
Allegedly it's the best thing since sliced beard, that's what I get from other threads.
I have a few concerns before I even get the razor:
  • £500? - WTF? I would never pay that for a razor. Ever. All of my favourite razors cost me less than 20 quid each (either that or I won them in a raffle). I know it's stainless steel. It's a nice material and all that and the razor will last forever, but £500 or thereabouts is well over my pain threshold. My Ever-Ready 1912 (for under £10 boxed) is over 80 years old, made from thin sheet metal and has lasted quite well.
  • 2 handles, 2 caps, 4 base plates. - That's a total of 16 combinations. How do I find the best combination? Where do I start? I guess it's an attempt to make it adjustable. I'd probably find the combination that suits me best, use that all the time and have hundreds of pounds worth of stainless steel sitting unused in a drawer.

First impressions after receiving the razor
The razor arrived well packaged. The box the razor comes in is simple and functional. It's a box. None of that handcrafted unicorn leather nonsense. The company logo on the box will not win any design awards. On closer inspection this logo is also engraved on the bottom of the handles. I'll never notice it again and I'm happy they didn't put in a more prominent spot.
The razor/s is/are of impeccable finish. As expected. The scalloped cap looks pretty. I like it. Next I notice the 100mm handle. Good grief - it's a beast. I think I'll start my shaves with the 85mm handle. The weight of the handles makes me get my scales out for a proper weigh in, and the results are in:
  • Handles
    • 100mm - 94.2g
    • 85mm - 71.8g
  • Top caps
    • Scalloped - 13.0g
    • Plain - 13.7g
  • Base plates
    • Scalloped 0.68 - 28.3g
    • Scalloped 0.95 - 28.9g
    • Closed bar 0.95 - 29.2g
    • Open comb 0.95 - 26.5g
That's just over 300g of stainless steel total. The weight range for the assembled razor goes from 111.3g (short handle, scalloped top, open comb) to 137.1g (long handle, plain top, closed bar). Quite heavy, but not outrageously so.
The shape of the base plates is reminiscent of the Merkur Progress. That's a good sign, as I like the head of the Progress.
I assume the little plastic rings in the box are there to protect the base plate from the handle. I have no idea if Timeless has added those or someone on the pass around (I did say that I haven't read the thread at all), but I'll use one anyway, as I do appreciate that stainless steel razors are for the OCD crowd and I don't want to cause palpitations :p:
So much for my first impressions. I'll go for a first shave a bit later on and will report back.
To be continued…

£500 is OTT Andreas should if you choose one handle one head be around £200. Still a fair amount on a razor, but worth it IMO. YMMV.

That's the 'replacement value' you quoted in your first post. If you pick one handle and one head, the question is: which one? What if I get it wrong? Well, I guess that's what pass arounds are for :D

Forget about getting it wrong Andreas, what if you drop it in the Thames! :)

Ahhh.. the photo shoot tomorrow! Someone is worried! :p:
Let me check my tide prediction tables... it's going to be low tide and it will drop onto the foreshore. If it fell into the Thames at high tide with the 100mm handle, I'd sink straight to the bottom and I'd come back at low tide and pick it up.
Apart from that, I take my pictures in a safe spot that is meters away from the Thames even at high tide. Even at really high tides, as I take my pictures on the safe upstream side of the Thames barrier.
On top of that... with my latest setup the razor would drop onto the grass below...

You can relax now, Avnish.

Day 1 - Shave 1
  • Arko soap
  • Mühle 25mm synthetic
  • Timeless razor
    • 85mm handle
    • Scalloped base plate 0.68mm
    • Scalloped cap
  • PolSilver blade (1)
  • Alum block
  • Tüff Herb ASL
I was debating if I should have a shave at all. Yesterday's shave with the Bunny V3 and a NOS Twin injector blade was phenomenal. I have only two razors that rival the Bunny in closeness of shave.. the Merkur 45 and the Gillette Fusion (I know...I haven't used either of them this year btw..). And the only razor that can rival the Bunny when it comes to shaving in style is the Ever-Ready 1912 (I have used that one most this year... and last year...)
I'll have a shave anyway and I'm choosing Arko soap for the simple reason that I have been shaving with it exclusively for almost two weeks. I'm on a mission to finish the stick I grated into a bowl a long time ago. I'm down to 3 grams of the stuff, but my mission is futile - I have realised that I only grated half the stick, but I have other plans for the bowl. It's a good soap and I even like the scent (or stench as SWMBO called it, but it doesn't linger after the shave, so I'm good).
On to the shave. As there is not much to shave I go for the 0.68mm scalloped base plate, with the scalloped top cap (because it is pretty) and the short handle (because it doesn't scare me). A fresh PolSilver blade works in most razor, so that's my choice.
The razor feels good in my hand, no problem with balance or grip.
Four passes WTG/XTG/GTX/ATG are my standard routine for pass around razors. I know that's more passes than most, but it works for me because (and I might sound like a broken record - remember those?) I use NO PRESSURE. Take it easy... reduce.. reduce.. reduce.. reduce.. clean!
The first thing I notice is the audible feedback - the razor sounds good. This is so hard to describe. Mostly high frequencies. Not like buttering toast (Ever-Ready 1912 without a shim) - that has more low frequency sounds.
Even with the 0.68 blade gap I get plenty of blade feel. This combination is not mild. It's middle of the road at best. I think I got a little bit sloppy with the angle a few times and end up with a few weepers. Nothing bad, but I'm not used to this.
At the end of the shave I have the impression that this combination is about as aggressive as I would want to go on a daily basis. The other base plates should be interesting.
The alum block tells me to take it easy next time and the aftershave has a good sting as well. The shave didn't feel as smooth and effortless as I'd like it to be and initially I have the impression that this was not the best shave ever, but after several hours my face still feels quite smooth. Not bad at all, but I'm not bowled over by the overall feel of the shave.
My most used DE razor is (currently) the Seygus Brass Open Comb, so tomorrow I might use the Timeless with the smooth cap, the open comb base plate, but I'll probably stick with the lighter handle. Maybe I'll give the Timeless a proper soap.. Tabac? Faena?
For now it's an OK razor, but I don't feel the love. Yet?
To be continued…
