The perfect shaving bowl?

Unfortunately, the photos do not correspond to reality. I have a Pereira in red and the surface is cheap, shiny plastic and scratches on the floor.
Hmm, maybe the ones pictured on their indiegogo campaign with the grained texture are prototypes, with the final product being the smooth finish as shown in your pictures.

They missed a winner with the decision to go for a smooth look, a textured matte finish would have looked great and would have made it stand out from their competitors' shaving bowls.

Hmmm, I sense a new product release from P+B :D

With regards to material.... being accident-prone myself I'd want something that wasn't as breakable as ceramic. Plastics/resins can be quite heat-retentive too to keep lathers warm, and higher density materials won't feel cheap and flimsy (e.g. resin brush handles from the best brushmakers don't feel cheap or lightweight at all). Plastics also can be injection moulded/cast/3D-printed to accomodate precise shapes such as ridges in the bowl, and these would be quicker and easier to produce than ceramics.
I've always wanted one of the American green rubber Marvy shaving mugs. However, they are virtually unobtainable in the UK, although Amazon has them from the USA. The downsides are that they take a month to get here, and are a ridiculously expensive £64.

Check out eBay, just under £20 from one international seller.

Woo hoo! Stopped in the Aesop store at the World Trade Center on my way home tonight. They had one on display and I asked the saleswoman if she had one in stock. Her reply? “We don’t stock them in this store.” I walked out and got on a train. I went onto Amazon, did a search for Sori Yanagi bowl and up pops the bowl for less than $18 and free delivery. So I placed the order. Can’t wait for it to arrive.

It is far from perfect but I bought it today from the shopping mall. My thoughts were to find a ceramic bowl that can hold tight the hard pucks (SV, Fine, Haslinger, LEA, MWF, etc...) to load properly the soap, without moving at all.

I now have 5 cheap ceramic bowls, all with different characteristics. Randy, the bowl addict!

Since buying the fine shaving bowl, I have used it for every shave (approx 12). I really enjoy using the bowl and its main purpose; creating the perfect lather before touching the face has been of great help. Handle allows for easy grip and ridges allow lather to aerate. It's the first time that I haven't had to clear away smeared lather from the bottom of the bowl, on every occasion. Very happy with the bowl. Oh another thing, no clanking of handle against bowl edge due to the wide circumference. It may not look the best but functionally it works for me and that's my main objective.
Probably said this before but IF ONLY they made it a tad deeper. Very good otherwise although a delicate edge.

The time I was bowl lathering (now face lathering) my favorite shaving bowl was (by far) the Captain's Choice one (the normal size - the large was a bit... too large). Copying from the site, the dimensions are approximately 4 1/2" wide and 1 1/4" deep. The bowl is big enough to hold (more than) sufficient amounts of lather but also not too big, so that I could hold it firmly in one hand. The wavy bottom was also quite helpful in creating the lather. Hope it doesn't sound much like an advertisement - it's not, I just really liked that bowl.

I’ve found , for me, that a wooden bowl works best. The one I use is not lacquered not too deep and is a slightly dense wood. Because it’s not lacquered there is a very slight roughness due to the grain of natural wood. This causes it to lather up very nicely compared to the ceramic bowls I’ve used. It’s also light weight, not gonnna break easily, and no worries about banging your brush handle against the rim. Cleans up easy too.

I agree. I use a Martin de Candre wooden bowl that originally held their lavender soap offering. It is a perfectly sized bowl for holding in ones hand while lathering.
