I have always preferred pencils to ball point pens, but have never used a Blackwing. Must try these..

I got a few Blackwing 602 pencils because I read the author John Steinbeck used to sharpen several before beginning his time of writing. He liked the 602 because it did not take much pressure to produce a dark script, which would be important for long writing sessions. I am not a pencil enthusiast, but once went round the Derwent pencil factory museum in Keswick and wasn't expecting much from a "pencil museum", but it was surprisingly good hour or so spent. Well worth it if you find yourself in the Lake District within reach of Keswick.

Apparently Derwent invented the modern pencil by clamping and gluing wooden rounded sections around a graphite core.

Speaking of lead writing instruments, I got into vintage Autopoint mechanical pencils. a few years back. I use a lead from Legendary Leads which has the properties of the 9850 and 602.

These are popular here with school children. I’ve found that they don’t always sharpen evenly. One side of the pencil generally wears down faster than the other. Ymmv.

I don't really use regular graphite pencils much but Faber-Castell Polychromos and Caran D'Ache Luminance pencils are essential for illustration (and my avatar).

Staedtler Mars Lumograph in 2B for me.

Very reliable, smooth writing, nice dark color, little if any breakage, quick and easy to sharpen, not the cheapest but still reasonably priced. Looks classy, too. I use one almost every day. Love it.

I use it with a Staedtler Mars Plastic eraser and an M+R sharpener, and never have any hassle or reason to complain. Took me a while and a few different trial runs to get to this combination, but this is what works for me just fine.
