A very long time ago now, they were every day use pencils as I recall, drawing, writing and so on. an attractive alternative to the plain yellow pencil.
Another reason I prefer the Mitsubishi 9850 is because of the white eraser which does not "smudge".

Anyone else remember the Pink Pearl eraser? There are or were Pink Pearl pencil top erasers available.

I used a gum eraser for art work as a child.

Believe it or not, there is a pencil factory in the US/ Tennessee, one hour away from my location. Musgrave Pencil Company - Wikipedia

I like the final paragraph in the wiki article

In the midst of a renaissance of analog[11] means of communication and renewed interest in handwriting[12] in education, the arts, and psychological development, pencils in general are increasingly preferred to digital alternatives for note taking and other exercises in learning. Custom-printed and heritage Musgrave pencils can be found in many American schools.

One way I use my writing instruments is by journalling. I find if I can explain something to myself, I might be better able to communicate to others what I have come to think is true and have a good understanding. I choose to use a modified bullet method rather than long paragraphs. I find this more useful if I need to refer back. I've ordered the AHGXG lined notebook with 320 pages three times from Amazon for $9. For those using a fountain pen, these notebook pages will not bleed through to the back of the page.

Thanks for posting, that helps a lot to work out the model as compared to 2B/4B etc.

The pricing is all over the place for the Blackwing, quite cheap per pencil if you buy 12 and quite dear if you buy one.

I still have the issue of having an old and trusty Staedtler with many 2mm replacement leads,

I have always purchased singles and got a variety rather than put it all on one box. I appreciate it is more expensive but they last me a while so I’m ok with that.

Yes, I think nuance fits the bill.

There is a French word puissance meaning strength and also used as an event in show jumping even in England! I suspect that I had managed to combine nuance and puissance to create a new word!

I have a friend who is French and married to a French woman, his job is a contractor where the English word Grievance is in everyday use, he tried using it at home believing it to be French, of course his wife replied, 'Qu'est-ce que c'est grievance?

Moving words between languages can be a problem. The word Ecru threw me for example, I don't think I have heard it used in England although it looks French. I though I had heard it on TV referring to American property or leases but when an American visitor referred to some envelopes on my desk as ecru I had no idea what they where talking about, turned out to mean unbleached paper, a shade of yellowish grey.

We live and learn.
Ecru is just a posh word for beige.
