New Rant Thread

Again, I don't believe that I was actually discussing religion, but point taken.

However, this is a rant thread, so one last word on the topic, I do think it's funny that people get"the $#!+$" when religious discussion comes up ( and I would once again, like to reiterate that that was not a religious discussion) because of whatever hatred, they attach to it. But all other hateful speech is happily permissible.

Imagine being a "clean" person and having discussions repeatedly morphing into drug use and paraphernalia threads, that's what it's like when YOUR religion seeps into a discussion.
More wars and death happen because of religion than for any other reason.

I don't agree with much of what TobyC says but on this point, that religion is the cause of more wars and death than any other reason, is true. To think that books written thousands of years ago are still used not just for moral teachings but to establish a basis for justifying actions taken today is ridiculous. They certainly are useful in providing a moral compass, but beyond that it seems looney to think that the rest of it is anything more than storytelling. Bottom line, so many people seem to have lost the concept of treating other people with respect and instead insist on telling other people how to live their lives.

So are we going to talk about religion, or aren't we going to talk about religion? Because talking against religion is still talking about religion. In fact, you just made my point for me.

If I remember, your original thought was that delayed societal response may lead to more societal harm? I guess a quick response without all the facts could lead to injustice as well. You referred to some people as bleeding hearts who may actually just be people interested in having all the information presented. We don't know enough about your story to make an accurate appraisal.

I think we would agree that treating others as we would want to be treated does not belong to one school of knowledge. The law of reciprocity says to return the favor, but another teaching says to treat those folks well that mistreat you. Which of these schools of thought produce the kind of society that most of us would want to live in? To know we'd need to prove it to ourselves. Has a swift punishment resulted in better outcomes? Again, these ideas can be tested. Am I better off treating others well? Am I better off watching out for myself and to hell with the rest?

Last week we were talking about plumbing and how to repair a toilet. @Chris decided to take a chance and learn. He must have had a smidgeon of faith that he could. After having had a successful outcome, he now does not have faith he can repair a toilet, he has the knowledge, on some skill level, that he can. Whatever we say we believe should be grounded in knowledge and knowledge comes from experience.

He has confidence in his abilities based on prior experience.

Chris, straighten these feckers out before we lose the thread please!
