New Rant Thread

Extreme sharpness is ephemeral!
I agree, it is very difficult to throw away tools or any fasteners including screws however long you have owned them just in case you need them one day or someone comes along and says 'you wouldn't happen to have ...... by any chance?

In my town there is a fleamarket, not sure if that is the correct US term, perhaps swap meet? One week auto parts, next week secondhand tools etc. next week cameras, musical instruments, art work and antiques. I took a taxi down there and the driver and I got into our own world about finding very old hand tools and kit, he was from a very different culture but we are just the same in terms of having tools not just for ourselves but the wider community. The fleamarket is good for sharpening stones too, some of them are a work of art.

We talked about the quality of screws above, the quality of old steel tools has really gone down, some of the pre WW2 German steel hand tools are unsurpassed.

There are still quality hand tools to be found, although I still have and use my 60-year-old Stanley brace & bit, here is a UK online shop I have purchased hand tools from.

I have a fiddle from a maker who made many of his own tools. His various blades were made from old antique cross cut saws. He would cut the shape he needed and add a wooden handle. He made jigs to cut his own tuning pegs.

Another rant that is humous. I understand to make money on YouTube you need to generate clicks and likes, but the titles are hilarious. Many will claim they know something no one else knows. Or here is the question no one is asking. Not that I waste time viewing this content, but they are good for a laugh, especially the conspiracy types.

The conspiracy types used to be funny to me. Now, with what's going on in the world and the US especially, I only get angry at the conspiracy types because their idiocy is now negatively impacting me. Just look at the stock market. The loon has destroyed this country in so many ways, including it's economic prowess. That's not funny.

I have a socket set from 1980, made by Halfords motoring stores in the UK and they still work great and have lost none of the finish. The box is really heavy duty plastic and its reassuringly heavy to lift.

Proper heavy duty from the days when Halfords made decent stuff, especially in their "Pro" range. Their newer tools seem to be total garbage.

When people become afraid, they run to what they think is strength. I had a football coach in high school that used to say, “nice guys finish last”. This is not true and can be proven so. As someone once said, what profit is there if you gain every thing , but loose yourself.

I'm not sure that fear is the primary issue right now. Sure it's part of the picture but there is a much more fundamental issue that is clear and obvious. Too many people lack the capacity for critical reasoning. So many people who voted for him are now finding out that his policies will make them far worse off financially than they were before. They will learn or are learning he lied to them. They will learn or are learning that he doesn't know squat about economics, global or national, doesn't understand a thing about foreign policy and frankly, they will never know as I do that he doesn't know squat about real estate either. I agree that the "nice guys finish last" is not a true statement. But in order for that to play itself out this time the public needs to step up their objection to his initiatives. Not enough public outcry. People held mass protests against Vietnam. Where are those protests against his decimation of the US Constitution? Sad times.

As you know, we cannot discuss that, but we can discuss the root causes, which I do not think is because people cannot think. Some can learn in advance while other have to experience something bad before they can think differently. I've been in both camps over my adult life. People need a reason to think differently.

I see that a little differently. People need to be able to understand the difference between right and wrong, good and bad, without having to experience something bad. And I don't have confidence that if someone experiences something bad, that that will result in seeing things as they are instead of as they want them to be. Too many times those people experience something bad and then rationalize it so they can fit things into their myopic and self centered view of the world. In order for people to see things as they are they need to have the capacity for critical reasoning. Way too many people in this sad country just don't have the capacity for that type of thinking. I didn't always feel this way but after one term things have only gotten worse, not better.

They would say to you that it is you who cannot think critically. We have to acknowledge people are where they are. If you touch a hot stove, you never do it again. There are people who insist on touching the hot stove. Both are able to think critically. One says critically, what will happen if I touch this stove? Is it really that hot?

People change when they get sick and tired of being sick and tired. Sometimes, some folks have to fail before they can consider an alternative.

Then, I've heard someone say someone had the guts to do something others didn't. Maybe someone else had enough sense or experience to know there is a way to do the right thing, the wrong way.

To those who say I cannot think critically, I would be happy to discuss the various topics in explicit detail. Those people would not be able to have that conversation. And why does everyone have to experience something before realizing that it isn't right or good? Part of critical reasoning is being able to come to conclusions without having to live it first. I stand behind what I said. I realize some will agree and others won't.

Sure, just giving you a perspective.
