The street in the pic is called the Shambles and is pretty much as it was around 1500-1600AD, it was the area in York were there were many butchers and butchering of animals taking place, the word shambles is English slang for a mess or chaos. it is now a very popular place with tourists, Americans in particular, you get a very real idea of life in times gone by.

I haven't done a pub crawl around York since I was a teenager but the idea of a few beers and good conversation with some friends in a pub such as the Shambles Tavern on the right is very appealing.

I love York. The Shambles looks like Diagon Alley. 😁

Car insurance renewal. Last year £203, this £457 ! Wouldn’t bat an eye if I had made a claim. But double ! Looked elsewhere, still more but they can shove double ! Seems safe drivers pay for the losses of the less careful.

I have heard some horror stories about insurance costs for electric cars, something to do with almost any minor damage is very expensive to repair.

My insurance increase was under 10% and that was with LV. My only advice is to do what you can to make the risk more attractive such as garaging the car overnight, reduce your declared annual mileage and to phone them up, the people in the call centre are on a bonus if you renew on the phone and they are open to negotiation.

I am waiting for my home and contents renewal, I am expecting a painful increase despite having a claim free history.

I'm with Admiral. Went up from £420 last year to £740. No claims on the policy and its a 9 Yr A4 diesel. No idea how they can justify that.

I called them to asked and they gave me a £150 'valued customer' discount. There were cheaper policies on the comparison sites but with companies I had never heard of.

Stuck with Admiral.

I wonder whether a part of the issue is manufacturers pulling the "seal and secure" move (that means that in some cars, one can barely change the headlight bulb) with electric cars to a greater extent than they did even with petrol/diesel fuel.
Plus they just cram them full of "niceties". I wish they'd all just start making basic EV models that would actually be basic in terms of extras, but not in terms of driving abilities.

I have just been reading about the Alberta electrical grid being on the verge of running out of enough power to meet demands.


This will/has happened in other places as weather extremes push the demand for electricity past capacity of a grid to supply it. Good luck buying from other grids as they could likely be in a similar position and unable to provide relief. This happens in very cold or hot weather which is happening more frequently and for longer periods of time than before. Makes me wonder what would happen if we were all driving electric vehicles now. It also makes me wonder where they are going to get all the extra generating capacity from in time to meet the demand electric vehicles will place on the grids. Anyone one else see a problem here?

I sure do. Seems our rush into electrification of everything is more virtue signalling than well thought out public policy.
