Another good shave. The Derby Premium is not my optimal blade but, it gets the job done fairly well if not great. It’s good for about 2-3 shaves before some tugging and pulling starts. The Karve definitely aids the DP blade in that the razor is extremely smooth feeling and holds it precisely and very rigidly. At least on my whiskers that’s what I’ve experienced. Decided to try the GD Preshave with the WSP shave cream and it was a fantastic combination. The WSP soap is great on it’s own but, the GD Preshave just gives it a boost in lather and the face feel post shave is amazing. Awesome finish and feel....

For me, the OC Karve is a much better razor than the SB Karve. That's weird, because I usually prefer SB. I think the increased blade feel makes it easier to judge the shave angle. My goldilocks story goes like this:

Karve 3.5" purchased with E plate SB. Seemed overly aggressive for the closeness to me.
Karve C plate SB purchased. Much smoother than the E, and just as close.
Karve B plate OC purchased. I can't really tell the difference from the C plate SB.
Karve D plate OC purchased. Amazing, the best yet. Feels very controllable, and closer than the E plate SB.

I should add that I've only used the OC plates once each so far. I've used the SB plates quite a lot.

Is the conclusion that technique trumps blade gap?

I'm not sure that I've entirely understood the question here. I think feedback is the key, for me at least.
As I understood you reduced plate aggression but still achieved as good a shave and then increased plate aggression and the shaves were still as smooth. I wonder if the underlying geometry of the Karve is fundamentally sound and that your technique for a Karve is spot on so that the change in plate gap is less important than your angle etc.

Maybe I’m talking bollocks as it’s early and I’ve only had one coffee...

I think with the SB, my technique is not up to the job because I don't seem to be able to feel the right angle with the E, but at least with the C I don't hurt myself :) However with the OC, my technique is fine, because I seem to be able to feel exactly what I'm doing!

That's my interpretation of what's going on anyway. I'm sure if I shaved exclusively with the E SB plate, I'd master it better.

Would like to get your opinions please.

I'm thinking about getting the Karve with the SB D plate and OC C plate. Some of my go-to razors are my Blackland Blackbird SB, Rockwell 6C R4, and Merkur Progress set to 4 and 4.5 for touch up.
For those of you that may have experience with the Karve and the other razors I mentioned do the plates for the Karve I'm leaning towards sound like good choices or should I be looking at others?

Thanks for any advice you can provide

Your preferences on other razors indicate that you prefer the more aggressive end of the scale. You might be underwhelmed with the C/D plates... Unless that is what you are looking for, a milder razor?

I have tried the C and the E SB plates. The C was decent, probably along the lines of the DE89. The E I found a little rough - not in the same league both in terms of efficiency and comfort/smoothness as the Blackbird SB.
Just my thoughts...
