Okay I had my first run out with the Natural Ireland Seaweed and Stout soap with a 10am morning shave. In order to give the soap as fair a crack of the whip, I used my tried and tested set up of the Timeless .68 SS, a Gillette Silver Blue Blade and my TOBS Super Badger. This is my day in day out kit so I know my way around it in terms of technique and touch. The rationale being, therefore, that because the only different factor is the soap any variation to my shave experience is most likely, due to the soap.
99% of the time I am bowl latherer so again I chose this method to build lather. So I took a small sample of the soap and applied it to the bottom of my Steve Woodhead scuttle. It is soft and pliable, almost putty like. The scent is what it says on the tin - seaweed and stout - which will not appeal to everyone. It wasn't really my pint of Guinness but I think for those at one with nature it certainly adds to the appeal.
Okay down to business. After soaking the brush I shook out the water to make it as dry as possible and began loading adding water as I went in order to try and reach the consistency of lather I like. The soap began lathering up okay and I added more water and dialled in with the result what you see below.
All and All not bad but I now have 3 soaps that I like to use because I know they all work for me - Wickham's, P&B and Eufros - so my bar is high. I thought it was a little thinner with more bubbles than the Eufros Ylang Ylang which I have been using exclusively during the month of October but that could be down to user error first time out rather than the soap.
On the face during the shave I could definately feel the slickness and the cushioning properties were okay, they certainly were not as good, in my opinion, as my experience of the 3 soaps mentioned above, but equally, they didn't let themselves down as much as some I have tried in the past.
For me personally, there was one massive downside however. While on my face, I did feel a tingle from the lather, nothing major, no burning sensations, or such like, but it was there. Must be the iodine in the seaweed I thought. Iodine, for anyone perhaps not aware, is known for its healing properties - so I continued on with my usual routine three passes WTG, XTG and ATG finishing off using whatever lather is left -and there was plenty of it as you can see below - for a post shave face wash. After rinsing off the lather first with warm water and then cold I patted down my face. After a few seconds I began noticing my face was red and I then began fèeling a more burning sensation particularly around the neck which I continue to feel as I write on Saturday morning
This is not a full blown head swelling, skin falling off or being covered in pustules thing, or anything like that, but I am experiencing irritation and some soreness which I am putting down to the iodine but which could be another ingredient in the soap that I'm not getting along with.
I was intending to move onto the seaweed version for the next shave but I think I will just move to the natural offering after I give my face a few days to recover. I will, of course, post my thoughts following that shave.
Remaining lather after three passes.
