Just got my first straight, what next?

One of the things I'm beginning to notice: Irritation after a careless SR shave might look worse, but it doesn't last. Not like the occasional DE leprosy I get, which might last into the day after.
Use the 1912 for the second time yesterday. It's hard to describe. I'd almost call it an intelligent razor, knew my face better than I do.

Well I'm in pretty much the same boat. Just started with a straight.

I've been happily shaving with Palmolive cream (in the green tube) for many many years without a care in the word. I suppose that with buying the SR and strop etc, I started looking at the "consumables". For some reason I've always favoured Truefitt and Hill, and have tried some of their shaving creams. All I can say is WOW.

Of course having tried the shaving creams - after shave balm and cologne had to follow .....

This SR shaving malarkey comes at a cost, and it isn't all blood.

Oh, and I got this one for 4 pound 50 in an auction I was not expecting to win (I'd bid a week ago and forgot about it). I'm pretty sure it is the same model (209) so I'll be able to see the difference between a production line GD, and a properly honed one (If the one I get is anything like the one pictured, I can already see some flaws around the jimps). Three straights in one night. I haven't got three of anything in one night since I was 19...

After 2 months of setting the bevel, killing the edge, setting the bevel... working on honing muscle memory, yesterday I honed a razor start to finish.
Wearing the bevel line into the steel and getting the bumps out of the spine took a while on an old Norton India oilstone with baby oil (I knew that oilstone would come in handy). Unlike the Atoma 400, the scratch pattern the oilstone left behind was - inspite of it's low grit - fairly unobtrusive and disappeared quickly on the 1k.

Then: Tape + Naniwa 1k, then lapping film 9-5-3-1-0.5 micron - then stropped. The resulting edge is a sharpshooter, but I shaved with it this morning and it was pretty smooth. I couldn't have done it without this forum. (The photos shows the bevel, it's not the best photo, but try holding a loupe & a razor over a webcam with one hand. I've looked at it from several different lightsources/angles, and the "mirror" is always there, heel to toe, with no "rogue" scratches)

Great work well done! That first time, putting an edge on a straight all by yourself is special. I remember the pleasure it gave me. Congratulations again.

Lapping Film is A Great Progression..Its Up there with the Best of Current Synthetic Stones in Terms of End Result..They Both Offer Consistent Results & Mirror Bevels Albeit My Naniwa Supers Cut a Lot Faster & that's Great..To be Honest I Laugh when I see Folks Saying Something like I Need to get some Real Hones when they are Using Lapping Film & End Up with Some Budget Stones from the Caveman Era..In Fact..For Me Its Dead Ant Time..:okay:

I do wanna get the Naniwa 4k & 8k Gouken around Xmas time, but I'll probably continue to fill in the gaps in the progression with film. The high polish from the film was awesome (TBH, I probably could've stopped at the 3 micron, definitely at the 1) , but it's been good to have the 1k to practice on & I've got a couple of natural finishers to play with.

I honed a stainless ZY with the same progression this morning, and it came out popping dropped hairs, so I thought I'd gone too far. I shaved with it just now and it was pretty smooth.

Lapping Film is Way Understated in a Lot of Circles..Way Understated..Whilst its Not the Be All its a Fantastic Synthetic System..There Seems to be a Macho Culture in Some Circles Regarding Film as if its Some Sorta "Girly Way" of Honing Compared to Stones..I Only Invested in Naniwa Super Stones because Lapping Film isn't Cheap to Hone a Number of Blades & of Course they are Faster Cutters..

The 15 Micron Diamond Film is an Awesome Bevel Setter but I Couldn't get it in the UK at a Decent Price & Got it form the USA...I Much Prefer the Chr/Ox Film for Progression as its a Far Smoother Cutter & it has a Lot of Cushion..

Billy, out of interest where do you get your lapping film from??

You can get the Diamond stuff from knives and tools dot co dot uk or wicked edge in the USA (tho' that might be more expensive than where @Billyfergie gets his) & the 3M Aluminium oxide stuff from workshop heaven or. in the US

It's an inexpensive way to do touch-ups: Bevel setting & mid-range requires some length with film (in my limited experience), but 3u (8-10k) & 1u (12-14k) touch-ups can probably be done with a third of a sheet of film and a 99p granite offcut from ebay. For the 1u & 0.3u film I used such a 6inch offcut for finishing the above two razors & touching up a "shave ready" purchase that wasn't quite up to scratch), I will send you the above third of a sheet & 99p offcut set-up @Godfather , in exchange for your Naniwa 12k :D

A Good Progression is 15, 12, 9, 5, 3, 1...In Fact its the Dogs Danglies...The 0.5 is Tricky to Use..I Stopped Using it..But Hey that me Talkin...That Said I would Leave 0.5 Till Later then Try it if You Want...To Be Honest the 1 Micron on a Cushion will be Around 0.5 Micron anyway in Terms of a Polished Refined Edge as a Finishing Hone..The 15 Micron Chro/Ox is a Good Enough Bevel Setter..
