When lockdown started, I had a beard and an unusually, for me, short hair cut. No hair cut led to me having really long hair on top with #1 guard shaved sides and lower back of head. Long ponytail that my daughter managed to badly braid back in April.
Thankfully, a neat and tidy job by the local Turkish barbers has restored normality up top and of course the beard is history. Mater says she’s got ‘her big boy’ back. She’s only 5’ 1. Cue accute embarrassment…
Crikey, I even pierced my own ear twice with a 1.8mm bore specialised piercing needle and a cork from Matron’s Prosecco. Matron was thrilled by the whole operation and daubed marker pen on my lobe where the two holes went. I did the piercing myself which was no bother: just a little blood. Wasn’t letting Matron do it as she was much too hyper and probably would’ve pierced my eyeball! All areas and gear thoroughly sterilized of course. Reckoned if my old Granny and her pals in the thirties managed to do it, a 6’ gairdner should be fine. Honestly, I had worse shaves in the early days and dermarollers? Don’t get me started!
Earrings ditched too now though as they were alright with a dodgy Viking-esque haircut and a beard but I didn’t like them at all whence back to my normal, clean cut self.
No Matron, you can’t give me a Prince Albert! Remember what happened last time? Yes, yes, I know you thought it would help with tethering but you mustn’t start invasive operations without my consent and whilst I’m sleeping. Honestly, I may have to start a body part checklist upon waking. God help me if she finds where I hid the chloroform. Ruddy woman’s a menace….

I've gone for a "Janus" style of DIY scissor barbering. The front and sides (still equipped with lugs) look as they did in normal haircut times; albeit with a slight hint of motheaten unevenness, which is corrected as and when. The back, or that part which I can clap an eye on, is an interesting rendition of a 70s mullet as adopted by Worzel Gummidge.

I have hair shears that give me a one-length haircut. I look like the typical Roman statue of Augustus.

I've been cutting my own hair since the Covid Lockdown began. My adventures with it are documented in a thread on DIY haircuts (a thread on B&B).

- Go slow. Begin with homework. Watch videos, read, and learn. Do this first. Do it later, too, to see what you missed early on.
- Cut a lot less than you think you should cut. Tomorrow it will look a lot shorter than you think while you're cutting.
- It's easy enough to cut your own hair and do a good job because you only have to become expert with one head of hair.
- The sides and front and top are easy, but you can't see the back so be extra careful there.
- Excellent clippers are helpful, but a pair of good shears can do the job if you are seeking a norma professional or businessman's haircut.
- Overdo the homework and under do the cutting.

I agree, Jim. My experience is that if you can, get a professional haircut every so often. I found it sort of resets the desired cut.

I agree, kinda sorta.
However, in my experience, the professionals want to take off too much hair, and they don't quite get what I want. They get what they want.
That said, there are some excellent stylists out there (and some not so excellent).
A guy I know - an inspiration in what we're talking about - has great hair. He also has probably the only haircuts I've ever seen which actually convince me the movie stars and politicians who get the $700 haircuts might be getting their money's worth.
This guy has the greatest haircuts.
I 'bout dropped dead when he told me he cuts his own hair.

anyone got one of those three way mirrors that seem to be popular with people who cut their own hair?
this is just a random one off amazon uk and btw this one has the addition of led lights but i seen one a lot of youtubers use and seem to promote but its way more expensive then this below, forgot the name of it

I’ve been shaving my head for 20 years plus. Always a no 1.
Recently I’ve decided to just go with the raw blade and get as tight a cut as possible without actually manually shaving the head completely.
As it’s a lot tighter I think I’ll need to take care of my scalp more. Moisturizer for sure. I’ve started using aloe Vera gel and it seems to work well so far(only used it once)
Just curious as to what others here use? To be clear, my cut is closer than a no 1 but not smooth bald.

Broke out the whal clippers and a No.1 plate this evening. It got up to 75°F today and while it is this warm I took the opertunity to get rid of my winter hair. Since mother nature and father time have both done some serious hair reduction I figured ro finish the job. It feels do much better.
