Completed Focus R48

The Focus arrived today and I gave it a spin this evening. [emoji41]

It's an interesting razor for sure. I loaded half an Astra and had a reasonably good shave with it.

I've noticed three things in my shave tonight:

1) The pivot angle is far from intuitive and has a very, very small sweet spot. If you can find it then it shaves well. If you can't it either does nothing or gives a very rough shave.

2) The resting point of the pivot is at the wrong angle. This makes this feel more of a prototype razor than the finished article. Another 10 degrees or so would enable the sweet spot to be found much more easily.

3) It's a terrible head shaver. It's truly awful on this task and I had to stop using it after one pass and finish up with Feather MR3 Neo cart.

All-in-all, I can see some potential in this razor and I ain't giving up on it yet. [emoji846]

Try to engage the pivot minimally, should make it a bit easier to hit the sweet spot and to apply minimal pressure, if any.
It's not that easy to describe the feeling when it's there, but once you'll manage to hit a couple of times, it becomes easy to get there all the time.

Come to think of it, the chap in the video was right - the click should only be heard faintly, if at all. The reason is that the head doesn't really need to go all the way back, just a little if you like to engage the pivot. I think the rest of the range of motion is just leeway.

2nd shave with the Focus tonight.

I used a Voskhod blade this time and got a pretty similar result to my first shave. The sweet spot doesn't come easily and the only way I can get ATG to work is by applying pressure which makes the shave feel somewhat rough.

I can't say that I'm instantly warming to this razor like I have some other razors but I'm happy to persevere with it.

The best part of the shave tonight was snapping the blade in half. That's something I'll never tire of. [emoji846]

I used a 7 O'Clock Yellow with the Focus tonight and had the best shave I've had with it so far.

It wasn't the smoothest shave I've ever had but it was certainly better than the first two.

I'm still finding the sweet spot to be unintuitive to find and this often results in the razor either feeling unduly harsh or not shaving at all.

I'm going to try it with a Feather on Wednesday night and will then pass it on accordingly. :)

It’s not looking good for the focus. Maybe it just takes a good few uses to get the hang of?
I think so Ross - I had a great final shave with it last night using a Feather and it proved to be the best shave yet. It's not often that I would say that a Feather has been smoother to use than an Astra but it's certainly been the case with this razor. :)

As indicated above, I had a great shave with this razor and a Feather blade last night.

Many thanks again to Lee (@Rowlers) and @Paul for organising this pass around.

I've enjoyed using this razor and it's certainly got much better the more I've used it.

A slight design change to the pivot would turn this from an good razor into a great razor. It's certainly given me something to compare the Broman to when it's released next year.

I've sent a PM to @p.b and the razor will be winging it's way to him soon. :)

The razor has arrived and i'll be using it on Wednesday for 7 days (probably)
7 days is proving a bloody struggle.
I'm using the pivot as per videos from fans of this razor but I don't like applying that much pressure. I've had to finish off each shave with my Weber just to make it acceptable.

Additionally I'm not impressed with the blade locating method either.

2/10 so far
