Do you buy Soaps because of Base (brand), or Scent?

Smells like CRAP to you. Smells great to me.

Funny thing is some people like Cigars, others hate anything to do with smoking.

My likes and dislikes are mine, Your likes & dislikes are yours.

Live and let others live.

I am sure there are many Wet Shavers who only use Proraso, or Cella, and are perfectly content. They have no need to ever try anything New, special, artisan, or boutique. Don’t make em bad people, they could be happy, content people.
Hey! I’m not saying anything about people Buddy. Take a chill on that. Don’t you dare say that I said anything about people or the choices they make. I didn’t accuse you of anything. So back off boogaloo.

I’m saying that Cheap, Generic witch hazel smells like poo poo. Synthetic and foul smelling crap... Imo. Ymmv.

and furthermore… about this

If you read any post of mine, ANY post (well except one, but they had it coming ) on this entire forum, I never EVER say anything about people or the choices they make. Unlike others (clears throat) who go on and on with every post about the virtues of inexpensive gear and insinuate with feigned innocence not understanding why others like what they like. Hmmm? Please. Spare me.

Here’s why, “Chemical Overlap (Indole & Fermentation): Botanical extracts and essential oils often contain trace organic compounds (such as indoles or similar aromatic molecules) that, in higher concentrations or raw forms, carry fecal, musty, or "indolic" undertones—the same reason some white floral perfumes or natural extracts can smell slightly fecal or swampy”

To me Witch Hazel is a nice smell, reminds me how an Old Barber Shop smelled I use to go to study human anatomy in the 1950's. If you don't get my pint back then the Real Barber Shops had Playboy Magazine, we called it studying anatomy.

I agree, Toby. Witch hazel is (was?) good stuff. I used to enjoy the Thayer’s witch hazel that came in bottles with a decorative green label that was shave themed. Do you remember that? My memory of that Thayer's is that it smelled less “witch hazely” than the current Dickinson’s smells to my nose. I haven’t bought the Thayer’s brand since they jacked the price up some ten or so years ago. Then I kind of lost interest in using the stuff. I have an oldish bottle of Dickinson’s somewhere, but frankly it doesn’t appeal to me. I should check out the Thayer’s again for old time’s sake. Thanks for the reminder. I will look for that in the stores here.

But you know, when I use some of those bottles of perfume (that’s what Gayle used to call my aftershaves ), I feel like Fred Garvin :roflmao:

And besides, I like my skunk juice. :headphone:

You said. You made me buy 100 artisan soaps and asked if I wanted some more.

That's was disgusting.

I did want some more.

I stopped in an all night pharmacy last night to pick up some witch hazel. I started to twist off the cap and the pharmacist told me I would have to step outside because it smell like crap. Once outside I opened the bottle and some asked, “who cut the cheese”.
Pharmacist's wife : "Who is this man on 04:00 in the morning who wants so badly the Witch Hazel?"

"Don't worry darling, he is Thirteenfret from ATG forum, the place with all these lunatics. Don't make a move and he will leave, he just wants to smell us".

@Randy is the only person who loves CHEESE!! and loves all kinds of smelling CHEESES!!

There’s a real WARNING around @Randy… NO BLOODY SMOKING!! @Randy is a NUKE!

Mostly I’m intrigued by the makers, where and how the soaps are made. I tend to feel better about older makers that still operate from their historic locations. I think I tend to use product pretty slow, so I’ve been sticking with triple milled hard soaps lately. They all smell good to me, and it sounds like they’ll pretty much last forever if I store them dry.

Aftershaves and fragrances provide most of the daily wear scent after a shave anyway. I might shave with D R Harris Windsor soap and aftershave, then spritz with Eau D’Hermes. I’m sure no one can tell I’m mixing scents.
