Do you buy Soaps because of Base (brand), or Scent?

For the most part I choose scent ; I have already researched the brand or soap base beforehand and/or already own an example. For blind buys I research the shave forums as the usual suspects will either love or pan the products.. So far so good, few if any duds..

I always go for the cheapest because the scent is gone quickly anyway and you can get a useable lather from any shaving soap. :wacky:
I don't buy the cheaper, but your point is on the mark in many ways. Hype, U-Tuber Pimping, Exotic Ingredients, and High Price don't always mean good or great product. Today there are many Soaps, Creams, and Croaps in the $6.00 - $20.00 Price Point Retail, that do wonderful job.

Lather is #1.
But scent is a close second. I don't care how long it lasts. If I can smell it as I shave, that's what counts. My aftershave usually negates the soap scent anyway.
Favorites are Stirling's Barbershop and Bay Rum, Caswell-Massey's Number Six (George Washington's favorite), Proraso Red and Taylor of Old Bond Street Cedarwood.

I have a bunch of samples I am trying to get through, just to use up one is Van Valey many Scents, the thing that is unique out of Texas is the base has EMU OIL.

Then you got Razor Emporium Meetup Samples from 2023-2026, then you got a few others.

Then my plan is to go back to not the CHEAPEST, but to my Best liked from Local Source.

Phoenix Shaving CK-6 that I personally love the base. Last time I was on a nothing but PAA binge it was three Soaps, that I use for 3-5 days, then move on to NECXT ONE, until used up. Scent was secondary, as it get for most part scent is washed down drain during post shave shower.

Base be in NO SCENT or Giorgio Armani Clone is not as important as the BASE, that is THE LATHER.

Unless it’s a purposeful new buy to try a new product, I will purchase based on the maker. In the last two years or so, I’ve purchased a Mike’s Vetiver and two MdCs I’d been wanting to try. Kept the Mike’s and one MdC, and PIFfed the other. Otherwise, the only new lathers I’ve bought have been creams, just for the experience of trying them. But soaps are my favorite. Like Gary, @brit, I know the artisan makers whose bases I prefer and choose from those when the mood strikes.

There is one U-Tuber who is who describes himself as a Sa-Nerd, or SHAVE-NERD.

The guy has over 200 Soaps, over 100 Razors, and maybe 100 Plus Brush, plus are arsenal of there Shave Accessories. I say why, what is the attraction, and last how much of this is excess?

Guy is interesting to watch, but a little long winded for my personal taste. IMHO you got to be doing something very special to keep my attention for more than 7 - 8 minutes of a u-tube.

Will also say the guy is a Scent Guru, to the point of breaking down every Soap, Splash, or After Shave to it last smell, or scent. Again boring mre personally to death.

I am a K.I.S.S., guy. Keep it simple stupid, kind of guy.
