Order placed (but won’t dispatch for up to 9 days so maybe they have to make some)
Congrats amigo. Worth the bit of wait to get it in especially at that ridiculously low price. Trust me, the quality & shave performance is there. If it were a Merkur product priced at 200 pounds and beyond or something from the likes of Timeless, Edwin Jagger, Muhle or even Wolfman, you wouldn't hear a peep out of the shaving haters.

All about perception and a healthy dose of skepticism is required but, as long as it's all within reason there shouldn't be outright disdain about a product that if you read and look, most or all complaints about the quality of product come from those that have never even seen one let alone have one to sample. I'm not justifying nor making the argument for the price of entry. Just making the case that even in Asia and anywhere across the globe where new manufacturing technologies are implemented with quality alloys, machinery & personnel, many countries can turn out good to excellent products. The shaving industry is no different.

Anyways, look forward to reading your thoughts on your Avanti experience in the coming weeks.

Happy shaves & cheers amigo...

Just food for thought within the confines of the wet shave hobby and the razor artisan makers both domestic & internationally. I have to admit that the line in terms of quality & craftsmanship has narrowed significantly on the perceived capabilities on what and how some of these overseas manufacturers have stepped up their shave manufacturing game to another level of product refinement especially within the Asian Continent and more specifically Mainland China. They’ve always produced more to the side of quantity over product quality for years and have been quite successful in flooding the consumer market around the globe with cheap/affordable shaving products, specifically razors that have been mostly miss more than hit. However, there has been a change in the last couple of years that has seen a shift into real quality production control from the Asian manufacturing field that has started to produce some extremely high quality razors at very competitive pricing. Yes, 90-95% of their offerings are more clones or duplicates of other existing razors out there and by far & large are replicas of some iconic razor tools in existence. Originality is not their forte and to be honest, there hasn’t been anything original minus a couple of artisan makers that have brought some real engineering & design implementations that have been of any positive influence or progress in razor development.

Of course everything I stated above is mostly opinion based on just my personal usage & experience on both sides of the manufacturing spectrum in using both razors produced here & abroad. The Yaqi Avanti has been one of those razors that has benefitted from the Chinese manufacturing conglomerate in stepping up quality, alloy & craftsmanship within the wet shave razor niche producing market. It’s nothing innovative as all they did was produce a replica of an iconic razor from Merkur that has been with us for the most part original in its entirety for the last 6-7 decades. All that was done was it was made entirely of a higher grade alloy (316 stainless steel) to near exacting tolerances in fitment and precision. Nothing extraordinary had to be accomplished or a new design from the ground up as I’m sure Merkur has the capability of producing such a razor to equal if not better standards that Yaqi did with their Avanti-Progress replica. They choose not to and the Chinese/Asian producer said why not and we as wet shavers receive a better quality product with arguably better performance at a very competitive price point. I know, the CCP controls practically all of the manufacturing divisions under their sole control and unfortunately, the government reaps the far majority of the benefits of production vs the independent manufacturers and small machine shops that receive a stipend for their efforts. And history has shown what the CCP can do to a people as it has been in front of our eyes to see for decades and history has shown that they mean business in controlling a people and a nation with a heavy hand. The politics of the situation is not the point I’m trying to relay here. It’s the mere standard that in our niche hobby, overseas manufacturers have seen what a well produced product can do and deliver from observing and yes copying many of the effective procedures that are used in producing quality razors both here in the States as in the European Union. Basically, they’ve caught up to the standards & procedures that the rest of the premium razor making industry have applied for quite a few years and see that consumers are willing to pay a premium for a well produced premium product. I’m not saying that razors will now be skyrocketing in price from the Asian continent but, their prices for these goods have slowly but, steadily have increased as their overall quality in alloy & production has progressed forward.

Many are divided in this field concerning the copying and duplicating of other products from designers & makers that infringes upon intellectual property of those said designs. And the arguments are strong from both sides of the fence without question. Unfortunately, all one can do from here is shake a fist at China in frustration because quite frankly there is nothing anyone can do including the World Trade Organization as China gives the rest of the world the proverbial single finger salute. Or, simply just not purchase any shaving products from them and that is no easy task as they have influence around the globe with how they have flooded the market with product and have a significant say in the world’s overall economy.

One can chose and it’s their right to purchase or not purchase goods from China. I respect those that stand on the grounds of making a concerted effort in not purchasing from them. They are willing to spend the extra in buying products made in the USA and conversely for those that solely buy from the European Union that reside in that part of the world. I also see that many can’t afford the premium costs that makers charge from those respective countries like the US & Europe for their domestically produced razors. They also look for quality and peruse value just as vehemently. It’s a conundrum and finding clarity where all could agree upon is almost a near futile endeavor.

So, the Yaqi Avanti while looked upon as a copycat or rip-off of another manufacturers design went ahead and produced a better overall product from top to bottom and those that have acquired one like myself have reaped the benefit of that process. Would it have been better if Merkur produced their iconic razor in this premium alloy? Arguably yes, but, until if and ever that Merkur decides to produce one, we will never know. In the meantime, the Yaqi Avanti is one heck of a razor that takes a back seat to no one in its overall execution. It’s better than the OG in every metric that one can bring up though price is subjective and one can probably buy 2-3 Merkur Progress razors for the price of just one Avanti. When on sale though at about a 20% discount, it’s even a much better value and I think at the regular price now it’s a decent deal.

Just my humble opinion & thoughts on this really good razor.

Regarding copying: the Progress is a 60-70 year old design and even in Europe would have passed any design patent (which I think is a maximum of 25 years). Consequently I think it’s fair game and very different from copying something like a Blackbird.

Nope, my thoughts have not changed nor wavered on what I’ve spoken previously about the Yaqi Avanti. Arguably, my thoughts perhaps have gotten stronger on the position of the best to come out of China. Two razors truly come to mind as the best to come out of China or Asian Continent. One would be the Urkanet Assassin razor and this tool right here, the Avanti Adjustable (Merkur Progress replica in SS) by Yaqi. I can’t speak for every adjustable that’s come out of the Chinese razor manufacturing group as I haven’t sampled all the adjustables made within that country. However, by looking at the quality of the grand majority of those produced and relative to sources that have put thought to screen on reviews of these razors, one can fairly assume and determine that the quality of said razors are mediocre to downright deplorable. Whether be of alloy, manufacturing processes or simply bad engineering & ideas, it’s safe to say that purchasing an adjustable razor from Chinese manufacturers is risky business indeed. Yaqi on the other hand has strived to achieve not only decent to good razor tools, they’ve undoubtedly produced some high quality shaving tools to excellent standards although be it by cloning, copying or replicating sound and proven designs from other manufacturers worldwide. Agree or disagree with that point is not why I’m writing this though it’s fair to stand on either side of that point and make an argument for or against. I believe in copyright protections including intellectual property rights to creators & inventors that gives them exclusive control to those ideas and intangible creations. On the subject of patents, once that’s done and no longer pertinent to design & manufacturing exclusivity for those that filed for such, it’s game on. The Yaqi Avanti falls under the latter as Merkur had the design patent well over 70 years ago and that patent has been null for close to 50 of those 70+ years. They produced a razor that is nearly identical to the legendary Merkur Progress but, not only replicated it in all of its aspects constructively, they vastly improved upon the design by using a superior alloy, superior manufacturing processes and without question which is the head scratcher for many, superior quality control over the original manufacturer. That is no small feat when one considers the history & longevity of Merkur as a producer of shaving tools & products. The Avanti is better in every aspect compared to the razor it pays homage to. There’s no debate and quite frankly, it isn’t even a fair contest to consider that they are equal. Don’t get me wrong, I still think that the Progress is a magnificent performer and shaves the whiskers with the best of them throughout safety razor history. It’s just undeniable that the Yaqi Avanti surpasses it in every metric conceivable. Price? That’s the only argument I will concede upon but, as the economics continue to change & adjust globally, the price point that it was initially offered for becomes more reasonable and could eventually be thought of as a bargain not so far into the near future. There will be detractors of Chinese made razors by many as a large contingent of wet shavers still considers anything coming out of the Asian Continent is inferior and of poor quality. And for the most part I do agree with that statement.

However, the old saying that even a broken watch is right twice a day has pertinent relevance with this particular razor. The thing is someone at Yaqi decided to go all out and get busy on a proven design to produce something of greater quality & value. They pulled the stops and actually produced a world class quality razor, again just a replica of an existing design that improved upon it significantly. And ultimately for the better. I’ve probably purchased about a dozen Chinese made adjustables in my wet shave journey and only one has stayed and made the cut for being an absolute gem of a razor. Love it or hate it, the Avanti by Yaqi is the Creme de la Creme in Chinese razor manufacturing capabilities in terms of razor tools being produced today in that region.

Fantastic razor…

Sad to hear but, it’s irrelevant to my post. Perception is largely the biggest denominator here. Most people in the wet shave community and outside of it consider almost everything produced from China as inferior. That statement may be true. Point is it’s not true 100% of the time.

Good luck in getting it to someone who can use it. If it weren’t for the overseas price debacle & gouging with shipping entities, I probably would have taken it off of your hands.

This is very relevant in this forum in that we tend to help each other as a close community. When purchasing, people should be aware that the resale value is close to nothing.
Ummm, not so fast there shave guy. Granted, all information that is relevant to shave hardware & software is extremely beneficial to all involved & interested in the wet shave universe. We all can benefit from the painstaking effort from many involved in shave forums across the net that take their time to post thoughts, experiences & ultimately opinions based on use with said product(s). However, the YMMV rule is very prevalent and some will argue that it’s predominantly the deciding factor in most if not all of these shave experiences. Quality of product has nothing to do with resale value nor is it intrinsically connected. Potential users arm themselves with the best possible information that is readily available via consumer reports/reviews or the producer which leaves the buyer with the sole responsibility of due diligence. In the end, the consumer takes the chance and ultimately determines if the product was a stud or a dud for them personally. We all roll our own dice, no one rolls it for us. You play the game, you take your chances. The product didn’t work for you and others, it doesn’t mean that it was a failure then stating it’s not worth it’s value because it didn’t live up to your expectations.

There is nothing wrong with the quality and performance of this razor, however a potential buyer MUST be aware that reselling is difficult, and that needs to feed into the decision making process when evaluating this purchase. I am providing a service here, by making potential buyers aware
