Who's losing the passion a little....?

Passionate enough to join a forum though :)
Not so much passionate about shaving as a hobby as I wanted to get the UK view of all things wetshaving. Frugal hedonism, if you will, or as Len so aptly put it passion for finding a better shave and then the best shave. I now get the best shaves I have ever had, but it never hurts to try something new occasionally. On this forum, I discovered things like Gemstone Trading and their great prices on premium Gillette blades, new shaving soaps, and many other things.

Here I am.
Tired of Forums for first. They're becoming too stupid (hype, nosense artisans, people who wanna show theirselves only, etc.) and boring (no new words and concepts - always the same thing: smooth, yet efficient [cit.]).
Yes, I can understand your point.

I personally don't like this "smooth and efficient" either. As the first thing you need to get a smooth shave is a solid technique in your hands/fingers (so, you need some patience too).
What is smooth and efficient varies a lot between different people.

My personal requirements to efficiency changed clearly over the last four years.
I was searching for a razor, which does it both, being smooth and magically efficient the same time.
Like please be sharp, but don't bite.
My discovery: Nope, there isn't (ok, for me).
Now, after investing time in technique, I get great shaves from razors, I really disliked first (bloody butchers, face rippers, skin scrapers, I thought them first - my fault of course).
Just, now I can get along with the aggression level these very efficient razors have too and I do enjoy their efficiency.

Problem stays, what is "efficient" to whom (or how much do you want and need and which result does satisfy you)?
What does "smooth" mean to whom (or how much time do you want to invest in your technique)?

I see you used the words " smooth" and "efficient" in you SOTD today! (relating to your razors used during your shave)
Yet at the top of this post you say , and I quote " I personally don't like this " smooth and efficient" either".
I have razors that are smooth and efficient but it has nothing to do with magic, it's because I too have a solid technique in my hands and fingers and prep and angle and everything else that goes with a good shaving technique .
When I say my shave with this razor, blade and soap was smooth and yet efficient of course I am talking about myself and my personal preferences just as you were when you were discribing your shave today.
Whenever anybody is discribing a shave, a razor , a blade or a soap it is the personal oppinion of the person describing it so you have to understand that as with all things shaving, YMMV comes into play.
Have a nice day :) P.

Well, I use these words? Yes, guilty!

I agree, about that getting a smooth shave needs a solid technique. In my SOTD I wrote:
"...But using the correct angle, they both can feel quite smooth (solid technique required)...."
That's why I wrote this.

I just dislike the use of these words, without more clarification to which razors they compare.

De gustibus non est disputandum, that there's a lot of subjectivity, well, I think we all know this.

Still, I can understand the point that the constantly use of these words can cause a feeling, that forums do not provide in-depth information, that preserves a further interest (in taking part, reading, discussing etc.) and this was (to my understanding) the point I answered to.

It is all well and good to compaire a razor being used to another one but unless the reader has used the named razor it is meaningless so we can only use words that convey our feelings but they are still only our feelings , YMMV!
Good day to you. P.

Agree, even with a point of orientation named, there still stays a lot of subjectivity.
It can just be a help, always to take with a salt of grain, true.

[I.e. from what I read, I passed on the Tatara Masamune, the Gamechanger .84, the Mamba .70, as they all sounded too little "aggressive"/"efficient" for my liking, when others compared these to their own favorites regarding these factors.
What of course doesn't mean these aren't excellent choices for others.]

Yes indeed, what you find aggressive I may not and vice versa, we have to veiw everything said with a pinch of salt because everything is so subjective. We agree. :) P.

So many truths on here.

Yeah you do loose a bit of drive. At first it’s all the excitement of new soaps, blades, razors and brushes. I still enjoy my shaves but feel there’s nothing to “Talk about”. I also usually have one day a week where I don’t shave. That’s always a bonus the next day as I get a lovely shave after a days out.

I think as well my problem is I’ve far too much on the go. I’m at a point where buying more is a no no. So I need to clear the decks and order some new in.
Which is why occasionally I have a good clear out, especially soaps, they can go in the bin. They are worth nothing used and just take up space. Then I can rekindle my enthusiasm in the hobby for not a lot of outlay in the scheme of things. And people mock me.

I do the same. I have bin with stuff that I either don't want to use or no longer use and stuff that I bought but don't want to break out just yet. It's nice because sometimes I like to take stuff that I haven't used in a long time and get reacquainted with it. Keeps things interesting.

I still enjoy shaving, and look forward to the few mins of peace I get.

I have found my holy grail razors and I am happy to stick with them.

Get tempted every now and again, but nothing I have tried recently has been worth keeping.

Just need to use up some of my stash soaps now.
