Waitrose are selling 14yo Talisker (the real stuff not the Storm / Skye dilution) for £30 instead of £46. I don’t know how long this offer has been on but I got the last bottle in my local shop. And then nearly dropped it when I saw 16yo Lagavulin for £70!!!

Yeah… Diageo have lifted the prices of lots of their portfolio out of step with the competition. See also: Talisker. Clynelish 14’s the only one that comes to mind that’s still good value. Johnnie Walker Green Label’s a very good blend too. Oh, and are some independent bottlings of Diageo-owned distilleries (that usually go into blends) which are worth pursuing though - Linkwood and Glen Elgin come to mind.

Edit: But yeh. Ledaig (Mull) still provide decent value peated propositions. My recommendation would actually be Benromach from Speyside who release small batches of peated each year - usually aged 10-12 years in either bourbon or sherry casks - for £42-45ish a bottle. Highland peat’s different but I prefer it.

I get that madeira finish is their thing, but I really wish they'd offer either a sherry or simply ex-bourbon casked version. For me the madeira over-powered the whiskey and it's a shame because otherwise I think it'd be excellent.

My first "drink" of the festive period... and a gift from a work colleague. Highland Park 10 year old.

I've seen it get slated on some Whisky forums , and while I wouldn't say I'm as fond of it as a Macallan 18 an Ardbeg 10 or a Lagauvlin 16, it's not bad at all.

Quite "peppery" with a bit of peat smoke and a woody finish.

I've not had HP10 since the kitschy viking branding (couldn't figure out what was what!) but always rated it as a solid whisky. It used to remind me of a lighter version of Talisker. Actually I think it was discovering Talisker that stopped my buying HP for exactly that reason.

Yes Chris, it definitely has a similarity to Talisker , I was wondering what it reminded me of. No idea about the Viking branding as it's my first HP. A bit confusing, I agree. Cheers!:cheers:

I never used to like drinking whiskey. But now, it’s pretty much all I have but not exactly regularly or in great quantities.

I do like it peaty and usually with a bit of ginger ale or beer.

I also like the odd pint of cider on occasion, especially if I’m down in Devon and Cornwall.

If anyone’s looking for recommendations for Christmas, here are some excellent whiskies:

Bunnahabhain 12. Just excellent. Approachable yet complex. Dried dark fruit, brown sugar, a bit of that Lindt dark chocolate with sea salt, leather, baking spices... It’s from Islay but it’s unpeated; the faintest whisper of smoke is likely the wood. £36.

Deanston Virgin Oak. If you like bourbon but haven’t found a way into scotch, this is it. Deanston’s doing some great things at the moment. Lovely, waxy distillate. Their 18 (£71) is also brilliant (and amazing value). Could do with some better graphic design. £34.

Ledaig 18. If you like peat, have a see what some age and a bit of sherry cask does to it. This was my surprise of the year. I don’t like Tobermory’s unpeated distillate but their peated Ledaig is good stuff. I find their 10 a bit one-note (I’m not that into peat) but the 18 is *chef’s kiss*. From Mull. £80.

Honourable mentions: Benromach Contrasts: Peat Smoke, Glencadam 10, Hazelburn 10.
