What made your day a good one?

Finished a book yesterday which caused me to rethink some thoughts. Instead of seeing others as, and I will use our forum as an example, either men who shave traditionally as we do or those who do not, we see people as individuals and actually begin to pay attention to what they think, say, and value. This is especially true if we want to be their friends or influence. I had initially written to have a positive influence but reminded myself that whether it is positive or not is up to them.

Practically speaking, today we will probably encounter others. What if each of us decided to see them as people with the same wants and needs we have instead of a worker at a business or service. What if we decide to see our next-door neighbor the same as we see ourselves? I am sure most of you are more advanced than me and are already practicing these concepts but just wanted to share my gleanings of the book.

It's good when a book can make you rethink things. I was amazed at how much I took away from reading the book The Chimp Paradox; I only wish the book had been written 40 years ago. PS. You can teach an old dog new tricks.

I was told as a kid that you judge people only on what they actually say and what they actually do.

Was told that if you go off appearance / dress / colour then you are an ignorant fool and you will draw the wrong conclusions.

It has always seemed to work for me.

I think it fits in with "say what you mean and mean what you say"

Sadly less and less folk appear to follow these kinds of mantras anymore but I still think there are more than you think out there who do 👍

Thank you @Zorro , @JamieM , and @Mark12 for your response. The context was as a marketer would seek to understand how to reach a demographic rather than an individual. Then, we might adopt that approach in our personal lives instead of taking each person regardless of their demographic. A type of demographic might be seniors, single mothers, teens, single men, etc. There is a popular method of trying to fit people into a category.

Me and my wife were in a shopping arcade and stopped for a coffee . Sitting down we noticed an old man and his old faithful dog trudging past. He later appeared with coffee and placed it on a table, unfortunately there were no seats as place was busy, I tapped him on the shoulder and offered him my seat. I’m no youngster, but it felt right somehow.😊

Many years ago I was in Chicago airport, there was a bus service between the aeroplane and the terminal which had a limited number of seats but a lot of standing room. I was one of the first on the bus and sat down. an elderly woman of colour came on the bus and was standing, I stood up and gestured to the seat with my hand and she sat down.

I had some very strange looks from other passengers, not sure if the look meant, 'it is a journey of one minute, why bother' or something else, but as you say @murphy5542 it felt right.

I would have done the same. Good manners and politeness cost nothing; even saying good morning to a passing stranger could start somebody's day off on the right foot.

Another book I read is The Disappearance of Moral Knowledge by Dallas Willard. In the spirit of full disclosure, he was both a philosopher and Christian thinker. What I gathered from this book is that morality has not disappeared, but it is no longer taught as a body of knowledge. When I consider the actions of people in power, for me it validates the idea that there is a way to live that provides a good life by encouraging virtuous living.

Am I better off and have a better life by telling the truth and being kind? Can this be tested? What about anger? What about road rage? If I have a problem with road rage, for example and I decide to stop the practice, am I better off not having road rage. Is my life better? Our experiences would provide the evidence that there is knowledge possible. If this occurs, I could teach others based on that knowledge.

When you live in a society where morality cannot be taught because it is not considered a body of evidence, what happens to the next generation. If I tell you need to tell the truth or stop lusting after your friend's wife, you can tell me I have no basis. We are just left with our own opinions. I think everyone is better off if I stop lusting after someone's spouse and I think I can prove it.

I said good morning to a cat this morning, as I do every day, she seemed pleased. 😼😻 She was a feral who had kittens on our front porch, we took her and the five kittens in two or three years ago and they're still here.

Good for you, but somehow I don't think cats can grasp what 'good morning' means, unless you hand over a bird, a mouse, or some food.
