I learned a new word Sunday. The small church I attend is having and event and people are asked to sign up to volunteer. A friend said I could volunteer with him. Another person said I was "voluntold".
The Principal (Head Master) in the school I worked was told by the district superintendent to send a school representative to a district wide school safety meeting with NYPD. Concurrently, I was our school’s “captain” of the Code Blue Team. We were the peeps who came running with the defibrillator, and ready to save a life with CPR. So of course Madam Principal called me to her office one afternoon. The assistant principal was there. I’m thinking wtf did I do? “Mr. J,” said the boss, staring at me while nodding yes. “You want to volunteer for this committee, don’t you.” There was no question in her prosody. I knew better than to say no. Too many teachers and staff who crossed her over the years found themselves harassed mercilessly, so naturally my reply was, “You bet I do!” Turned out to be a pretty mellow gig. It got me out of the building a few times a year as a nice change of pace, and it made some teachers jealous. Win, win!
