You can only get so far by risk managing by avoiding contact with people who may appear to be suffering from the flu. People may be contagious for days prior to showing any signs of having the flu. Thoroughly washing your hands when you come home does help as does wearing a mask when out in public. It also helps if you have had your pneumonia shots. None of these shots is guaranteed to prevent getting these infections but should prevent severe infections so that you survive them.I haven't had the flu jab for a few years and try to risk manage the chance of getting the flu by avoiding contact with people who may be suffering. Mrs Vac makes a point of thorough handwashing as soon as she comes into the house.
It has been a particularly bad flu season here and added to that there have been large outbreaks of measles with deaths reported to add to the misery. For decades measles was considered eliminate here which is no longer the case. Draw your own conclusions about the value of vaccinating for measles from that.
