What made your day a crap one?

I didn’t say either was responsible, Chris. In fact, owning up to my dumb luck was the first thing I said to each when they came to the phone. I was essentially asking if either entity had a deeper than 10% fool’s discount for idiots like me. Hence the “While only somewhat sympathetic to my frustration over my dumb luck, and rightfully so, neither the retail store nor the manufacturer is willing to do anything more than 10% off another pair.”
Fool”s discount must be an American thing, over here you’d be politely brushed off.

No, not particularly. It goes back to my days in sales. 35 years ago, I was mostly in wholesale and retail sales in the telecom and appliance industries for the previous 15 years. The prevailing attitude then, if a loyal retail customer came to us and presented a documented, legit, albeit unfortunate series of events, we’d try to make their pain a bit more bearable, than simply offer a perfunctory 10% on a new purchase. That way of doing business is no longer in vogue. I’m just an old guy yelling at clouds.

I bought two new pair of Hoka sneakers on April 27. Today is May 5. I wore the gray pair today for only the second time. Went to the park with my granddaughter this afternoon. If my shoe was an automobile tire, I’d have picked up a flat for sure! I needed a pair of pliers to remove the offending piece of twig. While only somewhat sympathetic to my frustration over my dumb luck, and rightfully so, neither the retail store nor the manufacturer is willing to do anything more than 10% off another pair. I’m thinking of bringing the shoe to a tire fixit shop and ask if they can put a plug in it. If that doesn’t work maybe some flexible sealant from the hardware store would be an alternative. If that doesn’t work I’m out a bundle.

Just wear the thing! Squirt some shoe goo in there if you must.

Yep. @Twelvefret suggested it. I bought a tube at Ace Hardware but haven’t attempted the repair just yet. Once I get past this upcoming week I’ll have the mental bandwidth to focus on cobbling.
You can apply tape to the round portion of the heal with the sole side up and fill in the worn down area. I’ve done this for LL bean hunting boots and hiking boots as well as running/walking shoes.
