TOBS shaving creams

I have a couple of tubs and to be honest I find Proraso red performs better than either of them at a fraction of the cost.
I have the Sandalwood and Rose TOBS.

Not sure of any drying effect compared to TOBS so I can't comment on that but I second that @Adox. Super Formula Proraso is my top value for money soap. Ultimate lather, performance & the scents are great.
A good value product & I always look forward to Proraso in the rotation

I have only had one TOBS cream & it was the sandalwood one. The very first shave with it I had a skin reaction, it felt like sunburn within a couple of minutes of applying it & I had to wash it off immediately, wherever it had touched my face my skin was bright red.
I left the tub for a few months and scraped all the top of the exposed soap away & gave it a retry & never had any problems with it after that. I did finish the whole tub but I wouldn't re-buy that particular one, not because of the reaction but because I didn't like their take on their sandalwood fragrance. (Proraso Red is what I am comparing & that is a much nicer sandalwood to my nose)

It is curious how we react to creams and the like, even more so when one application has a bad reaction and the next is fine. I have only had one problem with a moisturiser which produced the opposite of the required effect, my skin went red within an hour, then hot and then cracked like a dried up river bed. I put some E45 on and two days later I was ok.

I used some Tobs Almond this morning and had a lovely shave but then I really like the smell of almond, I got some cream on my fingers and it was a huge temptation to taste it

I only had one TOBS, in Rose, so I'm not really qualified to voice an opinion, but that never stopped me before...

I thought it was OK... not great.

Historically I've always had an issue with applying and face lathering ToOBS creams.
They mostly burned my skin a bit, as I usually applied them directly onto the face before face lathering.

In addition I never found them as protective as an old school tallow soap, like Cella, MWF, Tabac, Valobra, etc. and (falsely of course) never believed a serious enough straights shaver would shave with them.

Years went by, I took a significant step back in frequently rotating razors, creams and brushes and all that led to a significant improvement of my technique.

Having said all that, I recently purchased a Royal Forest tub. The one which is a Creed Aventus clone.

First of all, I think that these more expensive No. 50, Platinum, Royal Forest, Tobacco Leaf etc. are slightly enriched in performance.

Secondly, once you lather them just slightly in a bowl and then switch over to face lathering, there's no issue whatsoever with burning. They traditionally lather easily and superbly, the new scents are very well executed, and you get a great shave at the end if you know your equipment and trust your hand.... Nothing more needed.

Do you find all Tobs creams have the same composition? I have only 2: peppermint and Mr Taylor. Peppermint was quite hard since the day I bought it than Mr Taylor. So I am wondering if my peppermint tub was sitting in amazon warehouse way too long and is dried.

I have found that with mine. I have some which are quite old. However I use them like a soft soap with a synthetic brush. No difference in performance

No issues in performance as well here. So do you think all of them are quite soft and get a bit dehydraded with time even closed in the tub?

That has happened with tubs of all my creams...no matter the manufacturer.I have never seen it in the 'tubed' offerings. Interestingly there is never a best by date ......just an indication of use within once opened.

I suppose the difference between a tube of shave cream and a tub is that there is no air space under the cap on the tube but there is under the lid of a tub. With a tub that likely means it will dry out the contents.

I have a lot of creams in tube and some in tubs which are in my den like 2y. None dried. My tubs are from executive shaving, menrock, sveyn forkbeard all the some soft as the first day I bought them. That's why I wondered why my peppermint tobs is the hardest cream I have. Must be sitting like 5y+ in amazon warehouse before sold if it dried. Or the specific scent is just harder

Never had a modern tube of shave cream dry out on me but I have had tubs of shave cream get dryer with age. TBS Maca Root and LEA are some of those tubs but had been been around longer than 2 years in the house. If you are going to get shave cream dry out it most likely will be in a tub that has sat for a longish time unused. Just think what happens to a partial can of paint if left too long.
