::::Hijack alert::::
Thank you, Bill
@BlacknTan for the kind words. I’ll feel free to respond as I’m thread OP, but will of course defer to the moderation team here if they find this post to be out of line with ATG protocol.
Internet fora are interesting entities. Each separately is a small corner of the primary community they serve. My first foray into such places were guitar fora, and was very active in two such places for many years. At some point, a decade or so ago, I decided to spend my time actually playing guitar, rather than listening to newbs ask the same questions (sounds familiar, right?) and discuss what in my opinion were ridiculous and unimportant trivialities. Another thing I felt was that those fora were very cliquish. Just wasn’t my bag any longer. I still practice, play and love all things guitar. I also don’t regret walking away.
As an aside, while there are similarities between the shave and guitar communities, there are also differences. For one thing, maybe it’s age related, I find wet shave folks on both sides of the Atlantic to be a perhaps a more intelligent and witty bunch of people (no offense intended to the guitarists among us - you are after all,
here, so by sheer virtue of your presence, you are obviously an intelligent and witty person). Guitarists are great fun to be with in person. I never met a guitarist I didn’t enjoy talking and playing with! Otoh, shaving is a solitary activity. Perhaps that’s one reason we gravitate to these fora. It’s confirmation that we’re not alone. “You mean there are others like me?”
When I discovered the peace and tranquility of traditional wet shaving I ventured into this wet shave community, initially lurking as we all do, in many of the fora. At the beginning of my wet shave journey I joined a number of the fora, posted in a few, but at some point made the conscious decision to actively participate just at TSN. Truth be told, I continue to lurk in a few places just to keep my finger on the pulse of the bigger picture, but as time is a precious commodity, only post there and here.
I’ve been a member at TSN for eight years, and here at ATG the last two years. Both fora are, imo, enjoyable and mellow. Active participation and observation suggests to me that the vibe at ATG tends at times to be a little sillier and looser. Is it a cultural difference? I don’t know. Maybe… UK
is the birthplace of the Beatles and Pythons…
Both fora seem to have a solid core membership. Membership often overlaps here, there and everywhere (see how I got that Beatles reference in there again?). Btw, when I was asked to join the moderation team at TSN, I told Phil that I was active at this forum as well, and didn’t want to limit my participation in either place. It was a non issue. When invited to join the moderation team at TSN, I asked why me? There were others who imo were more experienced, better qualified etc., etc. Phil and the other mods explained that they appreciated my senses of humor, fair play and inclusion. For the record, I will add here, that I receive no compensation or special moderator discounts at Phil’s BullGoose website. I’m a customer just like anyone else.
FWIW, I’m sure we can all point to various moderators at the various fora who, over the years have thought very highly of themselves, and who perhaps “ruled with an iron fist” so to speak. Also fwiw, currently, neither TSN nor ATG seems to harbor any such kind of person. The moderators and administrators set the tone. Makes sense, right?
As a relatively long time member of the wet shave community you see waves come and go. People check in for a while, then back away, then maybe come back again. For whatever the reason, sometimes people feel jilted by one or more members and walk away, only to join a different forum with many of the same members. Sometimes people are banned from participation. To those who’ve felt such a sense of disenfranchisement, let me just say, I understand. I’d also say that folks perhaps forget that while membership is free to join, the fora are privately owned and operated. If one wants to participate in that forum, one must follow the rules, guidelines and protocols of that forum. Being a member of a community carries the responsibility of following the rules. Even virtual places like shaving fora.
But what about this Summer Heat, huh? The thermometer on my dashboard was reading 102 in the shade earlier!
