Completed Seygus brass open comb razor - Finished

The Seygus Brass OC has just landed on my doorstep.
First impressions are great. It looks shiny and stunning. Open comb and almost twice as heavy as the Black/Red Seygus 2016 I know. 107.3 grams compared to 55.5 grams.

Day 1


Today I decided to stop shaving with SE razors for a while and start using DE razors instead, because I have three pass around DE razors coming in. So I put a fresh PolSilver blade in my Merkur 45 and was getting ready to have a shave when the postman knocked on the door and delivered the Seygus 2016 Brass OC razor. Pictures will have to wait (have a look at the first post), but let me tell you: it's a handsome beast. It's made from shiny, shiny brass, which will of course get some patina over time if not polished on a regular basis. Compared to the Hone Type 15 the surface is much shinier. Time will tell how this surface will cope with scratches and patina. Being made from brass, this is a fairly heavy razor. At 107.3g it's almost twice as heavy as the aluminium Seygus at 55g, but nowhere near the weight of the Hone Type 15 with its 164.3g weight. I found the weight spot on. The razor has a very nice balance and the handle has a nice grippiness.
The shave: I have had the Mühle 25mm Silvertip Fibre brush for a week now and it is fantastic. It has lost about one bristle per shave, which does worry me slightly (my Mühle 23mm synthetic has lost zero in two years), but other than that it is now my top brush. First shave with a sample of Wickham 1912 Parma Violet. The hype is true. Great stuff. On to the razor and the questions everyone wants answered: is it aggressive? Does it have bite?
I always struggle with this question. Every razor is out to get me if I use pressure and put a Derby blade in it. Surely that can't be a good thing. I'm told that 'blade feel' is what people are after, but with a proper slick and protective lather (like that from the Wickham 1912) and NO PRESSURE I can hardly feel the teeth of the comb, let alone the blade. All I can go by is how much effort I need to get a smooth face. And here the OC Seygus scores. After every pass I have the impression the result is better than it should be. After my normal four passes WTG/XTG/GTX/ATG I often need a tiny bit of touch up here and there, but with the Seygus my face is as smooth as it gets. Effortless full on BBS. I leave the 'aggressive' labelling to others, but this razor is certainly efficient, that's a term I understand. Eight hours later my face still feels smooth. That's quite a result.
Also, just like the Hone Type 15, it's made from brass and it has heat retention. I love it. :dance:
After my first shave with the brass OC Seygus I'm very impressed. It looks good, it handles well and it shaves like the best of them. Thank you, Gustavo @Thalasos. A big thumbs up so far. :thumbsup:
I'll do a couple of shave offs with this razor. I'll compare it to the aluminium Seygus 2016, the Merkur 45 and maybe the Merkur Digress, then I'll let go.

A comparison with the digress would be useful Andreas, I think most of us are familiar with the progress and can relate to that, yes the digress is heavier but blade gap/feel remains the same. What will the protocol be regarding polishing when in our hands, do we leave or do we gentle shine? Thanks for the write up:)

My Digress is 111.2g, the Seygus 107.3g. Close enough for a comparison.
Polish it or don't. Gustavo suggested tooth paste for cleaning. Whatever you do - DO NOT SCRATCH IT! Seygus generously allow me to keep this razor at the end of the pass around, so treat it with care :D:D
