Completed Reggie's Razors Jupiter Passaround

That's exactly what I'd thought when I saw it - an EJ DE89 with a flat bottom.
In fact, @TobyC was saying in a thread (on TSR, perhaps?) that the DE89 would be a better razor if it were brass and had a flat bottom. A few days later, the Jupiter appears. :D
Interesting,... but why the blind holes, let the pins poke through and be free! :D Brass and a flat bottom, very interesting. 👍

Razor: Reggie's Razors Jupiter
Blade: 7 O'clock Black (1)
Brush: Highlander Tulip Tuxedo
Soap: MWF

The 7 Black is a good fit for this razor. A nice 3 pass shave with 2.5 dsys growth. I'm now convinced this is the closest you're going to get to a brass 89 head.

Caveat: One man's opinion on the internet.

Final shave with the Jupiter. I have this razor dialled in now. I completed the shave without having to think and in quick time - testament to the mildness of this razor.

My verdict: I don't shave daily but I could use this razor if I did. It's very comfortable in use and favours sharper blades. It still reminds me of an 89 - I actually have a EJ DE89 set up for the next shave to potentially confirm this for me.

If there was a choice of plates, i would opt for the next step up from this one - that would hit my goldilocks spot. That said, I've enjoyed the Jupiter and will be buying one when Jonathan releases them.

Just completed a shave with my DE89 and the same 7OC Black blade. I was reasonably right in my comparison. The comfort and finish are the same. Perhaps slightly more glide with the DE89 due to the chrome but there is no drag/suction with the Jupiter (you know I'll have moaned like hell if there was!!). There is more weight to the Jupiter.

Those of you that enjoy the DE89 should enjoy this razor.

It's... alive!
The razor arrived today (Monday), just in time for a lunch break shave. I had my previous shave was last Thursday.
I used a German Wilkinson Sword blade and 3P for soap, whipped up fluffy.
Right side of my face - Jupiter.
Left side of my face - Edwin Jagger DE89 head.
I used the handle that came with Jupiter with both heads.

First observations:
- Nice build quality.
- Blade tabs are covered.
- Blade clamping surfaces are flat and couple very well. They are a little wider than on the Muhle Rocca, but not by much.
- The rings on the handle provide less grip than knurling would, but enough so that the handle wouldn't slip during a shave.
- The edges on the safety bar are a little pokey, though not sharp.
- The thread could be a little longer.
- The scallops on the safety bar are curiously placed, closer to the inside of the safety bar than the outside.
- Like on the DE89, the shape of the safety bar suggests an angle and can be used as a sort of angle guide. It is slimmer on the Jupiter, but the scallops are fairly easy to feel (in a good way).
- It would be nice if the top cap and base plate edge would narrow closer to the cutting edge on the sides, like e.g. the Wizamet Jr, Lupo, Henson, Blutt or others do.
- It's brass and smells like it, but it doesn't really project and I have to sniff it from up close to get a good whiff.
- (post-shave observation) The blade feels a bit more rigid in the Jupiter than in the DE89 (nail tested).

The shave was interesting. Within a few strokes, I was whizzing the razor around my face. At a bit too high a tempo, even ATG, but the price for it were only a few tiny weepers a cold water rinse took care of, so nothing too bad.

Pre-shave is my current usual routine - rinse the face well, apply a little bit of oil on damp face, left on while I used the loo and whipped up lather. Applied lather, left it on while cleaning the sink. Took maybe 7 minutes in total - longer than usual.
The shave was maybe a little more efficient with the Jupiter than with the DE89 on the first pass, but then it was pretty much the same on both sides.
Likely thanks to longer prep, even the DE89 felt better than usual ATG. The Jupiter was a little more comfortable than the DE89 there, though.

Four comfortable passes to nearly complete BBS (my fault - missed a few spots during one of the passes). My face still feels very smooth now.

Very good result for a first outing.

It's... alive!
Another shave earlier today.
I started up at a sensible pace, but ended up rushing it and paid for it, which somewhat spoiled the end of it for me.

This time, it was the same blade (German Wilkinson Sword), same soap, same handle.
Right side of my face - Jupiter
Left side of my face - Muhle Rocca v4

Usually, with the Rocca, I apply a trick of sorts - before tightening the handle fully, I'll pull the blade against the top cap (or push it against the top cap if it's against a solid surface). This usually results in a little bit more of the blade inside the head and decreases blade reveal and exposure just a little.
This also makes some razors a little smoother (if it decreases exposure enough). Works great with the Rocca.
However, I have not done that today, as I wanted to compare the two razors without it to begin with.

It made the Rocca a little rougher than usual. Not rough as such, but somewhat less smooth than with the tweak above applied.
It felt a little less smooth than the Jupiter. I could feel a little bit of chatter. It was more audible feedback.
The Jupiter's had less chatter than I expected. Just a little bit, but, surprisingly, not enough to annoy me ATG.
I'd say that the Jupiter has little blade feel, but it's efficient. It'll also eagerly slice off pimples and the like, a little more so than razors than feel similar on the face to me.
However, I need to use it with a blade I like more than the German Wilkinson Sword.

Unfortunately, I rushed the third pass and nicked a mole. Small nick, but my moles bleed like they mean it.

Anyway, for my next shave(s), I'll try the Sotraco Silver Star Super Stainless. They feel like 95% Persmasharps - almost as smooth and almost as sharp, but don't last as long as Permasharps do for me.

I'm hoping to compare the Jupiter against the Rocca (with my the usual tweak - I'll try applying it to the Jupiter, too), Outlaw Evolution, Pearl Blaze and RazoRock MJ-90A. Probably won't be able to squeeze in more comparisons with the time I have left with the razor.

Having said that, if all my shaves would end up going like the two so far, and the razor would be below £100, I just might put it on the list.

Two more shaves for me.

The Friday morning shave was with the Rocca and Jupiter. I used a fresh Sotraco Silver Star Super Stainless blade. Same soap as before (3P) and handle of the Jupiter.
Unfortunately, I didn't leave the soap on my face long enough to help hydrate the hair, and paid for it - the shave was rather rough with both heads as a result, and both razors ended up skipping a little bit, enough to give me bunch of weepers.
Unfortunately, I didn't have enough time to pause the shave and leave the hair to hydrate.
On the upside, it did highlight the differences between the two. The Rocca felt a bit rougher but milder while the Jupiter head felt more aggressive but smoother.
Oddly, the Rocca felt rougher this shave and the previous shave than I remember it feeling. Couldn't remember which blade I used with it before, though.
I still achieved BBS on most of my face and neck, though.

This morning, on the other hand, I had the time and I took it. Facial hair was well hydrated. Lather just right.
To check that the blade I used on Friday wasn't a dud, I used it today as well. And it went well.
However, I did pit the Jupiter against the RazoRock MJ-90A.

The shave with both was very smooth, even reasonably smooth ATG. I could feel a little bit of flex, but not in a bothersome way.
Both felt about as smooth and the Jupiter was slightly more efficient of the two. I still had to perform the same number of passes on both sides, though. The biggest difference was probably in the first pass.
They were close enough that I'm not sure owning both would make much sense, unless one would want that little bit of extra efficiency.

So far, I've been pleasantly surprised by the Jupiter. It did bite me out of the blue a few times, though, in just about every shave, except for today's.
Clearly, I needed to pay more attention to technique.
So for my next shave, I'll try it with a pre-bent blade to decrease blade exposure a little.
That, or I'll pit it against another razor with a fresh blade, as I've pre-bent the Silver Star blade I used today already. :D

I'll try to take and share some photos of what it looks like with a blade pre-bent and one that isn't.

Hi all,

Glad to see the Jupiter is getting positive feedback and please keep it coming.

Just to give you all a heads up we have created a product listing for both versions of the Jupiter on our website and, if you want, you can place a pre-order for either razor. We will be shipping them at the end of March/Early April.

Bonus feature will be our logo laser engraved on the base plate.

Cheers

I've had four more shave with the Jupiter.

Three times (Sunday, Monday and Tuesday) against the Alpha Outlaw Evolution (twice with the old Silver Star blade, once with a fresh Permasharp blade). Same prep and soap.
The Outlaw felt milder, but had, unexpectedly, more chatter ATG, and so it was less pleasant for me during ATG passes. Efficiency-wise, they were about the same for me.
Having said that, I'll need to re-investigate Outlaw's performance again, because when I looked at the head from the side and slightly above, I could see that the top cap and base plate didn't seem to clamp the blade flat, whereas they meet flat without a blade in.
I compared top caps of the two, and Jupiter's is a bit wider, and its ends are a bit sharper (in a good way), whereas the Outlaw's taper up a bit. Perhaps that made more of a difference than I'd thought it would.
Things being what they were, the shaves went to the Jupiter.

Today's shave was the Jupiter against the Pearl Blaze. The latter felt milder, and was a bit less efficient on the first pass. However, they actually felt similar ATG - a little bit of flex, but not bad or unpleasant.
I think I might give this one to the Blaze, as it caught up during the second pass, and I ended up performing the same number of passes with both to a pretty much identical result. The Blaze side felt more comfortable, though, and I appreciated its slightly more pronounced angle guide.
What I don't like about the Blade is the split lather channel - that split seems quite redundant given how sturdy the safety bar is. It's fine for daily shaves, though.

Hi slapo,

Glad to see you enjoying the Jupiter and that you are putting it to the test against other razors. Your results are ticking all the boxes for the shaving results we had in mind when designing the Jupiter.

If you and others are keen for a raw version that is clear anodised, we can offer that no problem.

Yes we can add a head only option to the razor listing. Once the razors is in stock I’ll do that.

cheers

Jonathan
