The point about Damascus steel prompts me to ask about steel. I rate pre war German steel very highly for hand tools, is there a 'best' steel for pen knives?

How long is a piece of string, knife aficionados are total steel snobs, having said that there is a marked performance edge retention with super steels, super steels super cost, and you get what you pay for.

This is also my view, I value the skill and craft of the maker of a good penknife but I am not entirely sure that I would have any use for even a basic knife, the nearest I would have is opening boxes from Amazon!

However, I really appreciate the time taken by others in posting these knives and the work and design behind each and every knife.

Once I began to carry a knife, I also began to find that I needed one. This probably sounds irrational because one could ask why they didn't have a use for one before they began to have one available. Plus, it is a nice way to meet females who seem to need one often but choose not to carry. Perhaps pretending to need a knife is a way to meet men...LOL!!

Cheers, not bad of a first ever effort. It was spreading it that was the challenge. I found spread on, then wiping off where I didn’t want the patina the way, then leaving for just 30 minutes.

I love Opinel knives, my favourite one I have is a ebony handled one with a stainless steel blade, I have a few other Opinel knives but the ebony one is a beautiful knife and as sharp as a razor! I will take a picture when the sun comes up!
