OneBlade CORE

The forums across the pond are really slagging the core. It's all negative!
I have also read quite a few negative reviews, mine is on the way so I'll reserve judgement until I've tried it.

I have been using the OB Genesis almost exclusively for the past few months and I truly believe it's the best razor I have ever used. One thing I have learned though is that with the OB you have to use a different technique to anything that you have used before. It took me at least a dozen shaves to get a perfect result. Now I don't want to use anything else and there's the rub, using an OB in a rotation of several razors means that you run the risk of either not learning or forgetting the technique and have to re learn it every time you use it.

The more you use an OB the more you will be rewarded.

On a final point and I understand it's a personal thing, I find the Feather blades to be great, I get two or three good three pass shaves from them. Each to his own but I don't get why you would modify other blades to fit a razor that they weren't designed for.

I ordered the Core for travelling, I don't for one minute expect a $50 product to be as good as a $400 one but if it's in the ball park I'll be very happy.

Before I get into the shave I wanted to take the time to note some of the issues with the razor. As mentioned earlier the total weight of the razor is fine but the balance is all in the handle with the head feeling weightless by comparison. Many have noted a rough spot on the back right below the blade slot. It appears to be where the mold was cut. It did not have an impact on the shave but is worth noting. Other than that I had no issues with the construction of the razor. I had no issues inserting or removing the blade. You do have to lift up on the blade gently as you remove it.

For the maiden shave I went with the Feather blades included with the Core. I honestly threw out all my techniques for SE and DE shaving and approached the razor as I would a cartridge razor. Ignoring the instruction sheet, I did apply pressure during the shave. For the shave I went XTG, ATG followed by touch ups along my jawline and mouth. I do have trouble spots on the bottom of my neck in the collar area that are almost impossible to get BBS without irritation. As such I do not try for perfection in those areas but do expect and achieve a near perfect shave over the remainder of my face. The Core easily meet my expectations of a near perfect BBS shave. Better yet it was done without any drama or irritation of any kind.

Is the Core the perfect razor. I would say no because many want to test their skills and hone their technique. I do think it will appeal to those coming from a cartridge background. They don't have the high expectations of fit and finish but do want a good easy shave. I plan to use this over the Core over the next couple of weeks and see if my initial impressions remain unchanged. At this point I am starting to think of what I sell to get a OneBlade Genesis
Great write up Thanks. I did own a ss OB so reading your report was interesting. I'll be looking for a BST as I won't pay import and RM mugging fees.

Since you have had the SS OneBlade I wouldn't pay the duties and fees either. I think the Core will be my travel razor for motorcycle trips going forward.

Also, similar to the V2: This may have been mentioned, but in case not, I just wanted to call out some caution if anyone is thinking of using an unmodified de-spined GEM blade in the OB Core. If you don't modify the blade notches, the blade will not secure itself on the razors nubs. The nubs are visible from the back. Because the blade is not secure in the head, it is subject to moving within the head, particularly backward. I noticed this on mine.

Well put I totally agree with each point.

Anyone received the Core and used it? Awaiting reports..,,,
Yes...got mine a week or so ago. Gave it two runs before sending it back.

I wanted to love it, sincerely appreciated the technology. In the end, I ended up not with my typical 3-pass but more like a 9-pass shave that was still not very good.

In all fairness, I'd been reading other reviews and changed up the angle...still no bueno for me. Probably a great option for cart users before getting into DE/SE, but not for me.

I kind of feel bad for the company..

I have used mine for three shaves, now, and similar to @Mitchcumsteen , I found it much too mild for me. I had to resort to finishing my shaves with my DEs after 3 passes with too many touch-ups. I, also, tried different angles, but to no avail.
It is a fine shaver, but one I will not keep. I plan on sending it back and hopefully getting a refund.

Just finished my 3rd shave with the Oneblade Core. This is definitely the last shave on my first blade (3 Shaves). It's just starting the feel a little less sharp but not very tuggy yet. Sooo... Yeah.... A 2 pass BBS irritation free shave! The design of this razor head is really excellent if you use it as designed. Don't fear the flexing head or pressure. The only other razor I can say gives me smooth shaves like this is the Rockwell 6S. It makes me wonder what the Genesis shaves like... Its got to be fantastic if the Core is an indicator.
