I don't think a suite is necessary, but dressing in a... tidy way is also a way of showing some respect, care or appreciation.
Sure, one can be a complete turd while dressed up nicely, but for special occasions, looking neat even if not dressed particularly nicely, helps get the message across.
While the dead might not care, the living are likely to appreciate it, even if they normally don't.

Maybe what the survivors really care about is empathy and compassion for their loved one and for them. One could hold a hand or just look into another person’s eyes and not say a word wearing a t shirt.

I have to hold my hand up here and I know I might be the one one out, I know I am a bit old fashioned but I dress for the occasion, I wear a dark suit, shirt, tie and polished black leather shoes when it is appropriate to do so.

Glad to hear I’m not alone. I think that by taking the time to put on one’s best bib and tucker for a funeral, wedding, etc is a sign of respect and thoughtfulness. Some might see dressing up as passe, but respect and thoughtfulness never are.

Good point. But even if one doesn’t own a suit/blazer/sports coat, one should make the effort to make sure one’s appearance is neat, tidy and clean. Too many of the blokes attending the funeral I was at last weekend looked as though they had just dropped their spades in the allotment.
Yes, there is no excuse for looking like a dirty unkept mess even when going casual.
