Wore those things for years, then converse stopped making them for a while and I was buying old stock for twice the price. They started making them again and both the kids and me were wearing them, not the wife though. My daughter went to Converse College (unrelated) and they all had All Stars. Back in the day we just called them Converse shoes, and the only colors I remember were white, black, and red. Now that I'm a bit heavier, I find them too flat to wear for long periods.

You’re so lucky! I’m more than a bit envious. Chuck Taylors look so damn cool! I wore them for a few years during adolescence but never really bonded with them due to owning two of the world’s flattest feet. There were two variations of Converse available when I was a kid. The $8 Coach model had a different pattern on the sole and some other cosmetic differences which separated them from the pricier and way groovier $12 All Stars. It wasn’t until I was 11 or 12 years old when my folks finally caved and agreed to the upscale version (never let anyone tell you peer pressure isn’t real!). Pumas were huge in the early 70s. They felt much cushier, and I wore them all through high school. In my mid 20s I tried a pair of All Stars again but wore them only once. Later, I found New Balance and wore them for decades. At some point I was persuaded to try custom orthotics in the New Balance shoes. I could easily wear them all day and night without aching feet! For the last 5 years or so I’m wearing Hokas. They’ve made custom orthotics redundant. But until you adjust to their visual distinctiveness, they’re somewhat clunky and hideous. Especially compared to those awesome Chuck Taylors of yours. What color did you choose?

We had those colors here. There were also the sometimes more difficult to source blue and green versions.

In my teens and early 20s, I wore these most of the time. They came from Woolworths and were cheap. Never heard of Converse until the turn of the century.

The same for me, I think it was my early teens and we just called them Baseball boots, good for everything apart from riding a pushbike, just too wide.

The originals were laced farther toward the toes.
Chuck Taylor was instrumental in improving basketball shoes. Sometimes I will hear someone refer to Converse All-Stars as "Chucks". One of my granddaughters loves to wear them, even with a dress. She like the black ones. Her first ones were generic and she learned they were the first time she wore them to school.
She gets the real ones now days.
Other granddaughters introduced me to the comfort of Vans. I had heard of them, of course, but never wore them. I now have three pair. The longer you wear them the more comfortable it seems.
Mine are the classic black and white high tops, but I do have a limited edition black and white tie-dye pair on the way.
@TobyC have you tried the Converse Chuck 70s? They’re supposed to be more cushioned and feel more like regular trainers.

I don't think they are still produced, but I thought the black leather with natural orange leather laced Converse Hollis had a good look.
