Completed Merkur 37C Slant - CLOSED

May I initially address my comments towards upside down Andreas. I do have a 37C ... got it ages ago. Have always rated it quite highly and wasn't as troubled by it's shorter handle as I was with the short handle on the 45 Bakelite. I did read your earlier reports again today and have to say I can see why you say what you say about the 37C. Tend to agree the slant doesn't seem to offer a significant advantage over my Jagger DE 89 which I take to be twinned with the 34C ... but both are perfectly respectable enough for me and generally do the job well, I feel. So tonight I got out the 37C (with a Treet Platinum on its 2nd outing) to see how it was after my absence from it. Don't know if it was the razor or the blade or the soap or the price of eggs or a combination of them all but I wasn't enjoying it so much. I thought I was going to blast you out of the water and say how much you'd under-estimated it etc etc - but based on today's use of it I'm not able to. Dohh!
What's woryying me most is - my time with the Blackbird (I still have it on loan and use it every time ) and my past experience with Martin's Wolfman, Timeless and the PAA - have spoiled me somewhat. I really felt today wasn't half as enjoyable as I was hoping. I should, perhaps, have used the Weber to see how that went, but this passaround got me inspired to try it and I was hoping to return to it and say how great I was finding it. To quote the expression "don't get me wrong", I would say "don't get me wrong but I could almost see me becoming a right proper obnoxious razor snob".

Well, for me, it was amazing. I think I probably said in my summary at the end of the comparison that I preferred the three other stainless razors in the shootout but still thought it was an eye-opener...it was so "in your face" but didn't cut me or irritate anything and probably comes the nearest to using a straight razor?
EDIT. I've never used a straight razor, so perhaps I'm speculating too much?

The 37C is a good razor. I personally find it doesn't add anything over the 34C, let alone other more exciting razors. Other faces will vary. I sold my 37C and have no regrets. Vintage slants with plenty of twist in the blade (Trumpf, Fasan and others) are a different story, although they are usually made from plastic/bakelite and have handles that remind me of the Merkur 45, so they might not be your cup of tea.
Some people 'get' the 37C, some don't. I don't.

There is nothing to worry about. Use it the same way you would use any other DE. Forget about the slant thing. The 37C is not an aggressive razor.Looking forward to trying this next, wazza. Slightly worried to as it will my first slant razor. Still, you gotta start sometime

Ufortunately I have not made good use of this razor, having not shaved since last time, ooops. Busy at work/uni and baby. But today I used the 37c again.
Didnt think the razor would be very good on the growth, usually the Gem MMOC get brought out but again, it did a superb job. Not much to say other than it gave me a lovely shave, not a bbs but I dont strive for that, as long as I dont have razor burn and I look clean then its a job well done.

I have heard so much about the infamous Merkur 37C but to finally hold it, I was surprised by it's size.
Yet it has a lovely weight and great grip, snugly secure although I pre-fair a longer handle.
I have used it twice thus far both with varying results a few nicks (first time in months).
For the first shave I had four days growth, a new Merkur Blade - Caties bubbles "Le Piment de la Vie".
I have to say I was quiet apprehensive using the 37c this first time, short strokes I told myself.
So I made enough lather for three passes and warmed the razor.
The 37c simply glided through efficiently and effortlessly, So much stubble gone remarkable.
Applied the second lathering and shaved up but at an angle across the grain,
Again I could hear this razor slice through the remaining few hairs.
For a third pass I only shaved under my chin area.
This is a difficult area that even my EJ89 struggles with but not the 37c-Smooth.
To finish I used Castle Forbes Lime Essential Oil Aftershave Balm.
For my second use of the 37c I had two days of growth and I decided to use a different blade and soap combination.
This time I would use Geo.F.Trumper's Lime Skin Food, A Feather blade and Saponificio Varesino "Manna di Sicilia" soap.
As before I made enough lather for at least three passes and began.
Once again the 37c glided effortlessly removing stubble with ease. I made the mistake of using longer strokes and

Little blood spots popped up on my chin, Small strokes "numb nutz" I thought.
It is amazing how this little but very mighty razor performs it's job.
After two passes I was done and to finish I thought Why not use my Layrite No. 9 Bay Rum Aftershave.

My skin was on fire for over five mins I would have been better off rubbing nettles into my face.
Bar this I Did achieve the closest shave I have ever had in my life.
In all found the 37c to be an razor with an aggression factor of around 6.5/10

For me its a mildish shave but when you try and get a BBS cos its mild you end up over doing it and thats where the irritation came about. So not aggressive just one you need to not overdo

Yes, everyone's skin is a bit different as to what they can tolerate. Fortunately my skin, like the rest of me, is fairly insensitive. My normal morning shave is a 4 pass shave regardless of what I am using. I think some might consider that over doing it.
