Learning to shave with the Feather Artist Club

I’m also impressed with how much muscle memory I’ve retained. I don’t think I’ve used my SS for at least 6 months.

I like the sounds of that. Definitely don't want to learn it, and then find I've forgotten it all after a month or two.

Been shaving my head and face with these razors for many years and for me all guarded and light versions of all brands of blades are out, just can’t get good shaves with them. It’s all practice, same as with a straight. Favorite blades here are feather pro and super pro, Kai mild and Schick pro

Thanks @Snuff, useful to have the benefit of people's experience.

Extreme sharpness is ephemeral!

I'm with you Ron, I have owned and shaved with both those razors the SS and my favourite the DX both folding, I have tried the pro-guard and lite, my opinion of those two blades are not good, I love the Feather Super blades, much sharper and smoother, I prefer a much more acute angle with less pressure when using these type of razors, my personal advice I say use the sharper blades and less pressure is the way forward.

Yep- that’s where I want to get too.

Any idea why the DX is more than twice the price of the SS?
This has always been an issue when comparing Feather and Kai razors against the cheaper clones. I’ve put new scales on different versions and although the quality difference is evident, it doesn’t seem to make any difference to the way they shave. The most important factor is that the blade is seated properly and has an even expose along its length. From what I could see, the cheaper types seem to achieve this as well as the expensive ones - therefore you’re paying for aesthetics and quality of materials. Exactly the same as buying an upmarket SS razor rather than a basic Gillette - you get the same shave at a different price.

For anyone wanting to try these out I’d suggest putting a wanted advert or get one of the cheaper clones.

Whilst we're in isolation during coronavirus, I decided to try to learn how to shave with the Feather Artist Club. I'm doing videoconferences reasonably regularly, but it's still probably less of a problem if I cut my face, so I figured this was a really good opportunity.

So far, this is my progress...

Saturday - 3-pass shave with Feather Proguard in Feather SS, using a DE for the moustache area and end of chin - no cuts, patchy shave
Sunday - 3-pass shave with Feather Proguard in Feather DX, using a DE for the moustache area and end of chin - no cuts, patchy shave
Monday - 3-pass shave with Feather Professional in Feather SS, using a DE for the moustache area only - no cuts! shave was less patchy
Tuesday - Feather Professional in Feather SS - something went horribly wrong and I had to switch to a DE after 2 passes - several cuts, obviously too confident

So I'm trying to work out the right strategy for tomorrow. I think I'm going to stick to the Feather SS for now, but not sure whether to keep persevering with the Professional blade. I felt like the Proguard wasn't teaching me anything, and the Professional is definitely less tuggy.
Have only read the first post here and felt the need to say this: You clearly don’t have a nearly two and a nearly six year old stuck inside with you... My focus and attention to anything is virtually nil. (Or you’re just a much better man than I, which may very well be the case. Or just more structured.) That aside, looking forward to reading more and following your Feather journey, Simon.

Haha, you're right, I don't. Mine are 16 and 11.

But I wake at 4 or 5 am, and there's nothing I can do about it, and no one else is up at that time. In fact, no one else is up until 10am most days at the moment :)

Day 7

OK today wasn't bad.

Feather Artist Club SS with Feather Proguard blade

After yesterday's shave, I realised that smooth means it's not cutting, so tuggy means it is cutting. Therefore I decided to aim for an angle that gave a little tugginess, but right on the edge. Perhaps this is what I need to practice. I would say today's shave was the best with a Proguard so far. It's still patchy, but much more of my face is well-shaven. I did 3 passes, WTG each time, and left the moustache and chin to a DE. No cuts.

Feeling my cheeks, I'd say it's acceptable and getting close to what I can do with a decent DE. The neck is patchier. I have Kai Protouch blades on the way, so will probably swap to them when they arrive.
