You will be Talkin Around 30 Micron Lapping Film to Work on that Dollar from the Factory..And Even then I Would Be Using Diamond Lapping Film for that Kinda Work..That's a Resto Job...Diamond Cuts Faster than Chromium Oxide Film...I Use Diamond 15 Micron to Bevel Set...I Use the Chromium Oxide Film for Progression because is a Far Smoother Polisher & Finnish..Its Also Softer..:p:

Yeah its a Hans Baier Silver Tip...Lot of Brush for the Doe...Germans Unlike the Brits Don't Put Up with Pish Products...The Other One is a German Vintage VP Leonhardy...:D

Nice! £4.50 can hardly go wrong!! All this SR activity on ATG is making me more excited for when mine turns up... Patiently waiting though as have loads of razors to enjoy in the mean time!

Not sure I believe you got it at 19 either :p:

For What its Worth..Unless You are Proficient at Honing & Have all the Honing Gear to Start with a Gold Dollar from the Factory is a Very Bad Investment..Some are Duds & Some Need a Lot of Work..Even Going a Lapping Film Road it Will Cost You a Pretty Penny & its More than Likely that You Will Ruin it Anyway..Penny Pinchers Usually Try this at their Peril because they are Fanatically Miserable to the Point of Stupidity .:laugh:

Thanks for the info - It'll be six months before I get round (and save up) to working on the GD, if at all (I bought it to stick on the wall). I'll have some questions in that time tho' about honing other razors & the right combo of stones, films, sprays & pastes. (I've got a steady hand and a light touch, but you never know until you try, eh?)

That's it, try, try and try again. Watch loads of youtube vids, separate the good from the bad, put on some zen music and use the lightest touch possible. When you get 'that' edge (which is easier than you think) and have 'that' shave its bloody awesome!
Well worth getting it done professionally too to feel the difference and as a benchmark.

I never thought of the music thing - usually do my own running commentary anyway :D - that's a great idea. I've got a few folders of vids and a dozen cut & paste guides from SRP (a folder with a dozen vids by Lynn Abrams alone). What seems interesting is the fact that some guys seem to be able to do an awful lot with just a 4/8k, and others just cannot get the hang of it with a full Naniwa or Shapton set.

That was my thinking behind getting a honed GD and a factory one, to see the differences in shoulder & shank, although I'm aware the difference between two factory GDs alone can be vast, the 200 and up numbers have - I'm told - slightly less problems with regards to QC. And be good to compare the US bought Japanese edge (which I couldn't resist) with the bevel on the GD (I've got a loupe for that purpose).

Yep I have seen the same issues arise. I think apart from decent equipment it is down to focus, concentration and patience.

I was just gonna say "What would you call this?" but that begged the reply "I'd call it 'A razor...'
or "I'd call it 'Ian' or 'Gladys' or 'Schnookums'
