We should have a "Base notes" (blade notes?) type reference thread for soaps & cremes.
Good idea you can all send your soaps to me at...

I'm hopeless at describing them, it takes me a long time to get my own soap scents right. :)

You need someone with an exceptionally good vocabulary range, an understanding of scent notes and most important a good nose.

I have a tub somewhere... It has an unpleasant (YMMV) smell and average performance.

First to PM me can have it gratis.
(if I can find it :laugh:)

EDIT - I CAN'T find it, must have chucked it because it was crap!:laugh:

I haven't had a chance to try Godrej hard soaps, or, at least I don't think I have. I used some sort of hard soap when I was in India, but I can't remember what it was. I do know that I used a Godrej lock to lock my front door in India (and, Fox, that's surely the reason for the key symbol on the round - they're famous for locks).

There's a local Pakistani grocer that at least sometimes carries some of Godrej's creams, so I've tried the "classic" scent (or whatever they call it), but wasn't overly impressed. They haven't had any of the Godrej hard rounds that I've seen, so I might just order one online sometime.

I've been wanting to try some soap from this Indian artisan maker, Trigodon: http://trigodon.in/collections/all - but so far I haven't got them to reply to email, and the web interface on their site doesn't allow for shipment outside of India.

I also know of an artisan maker of (hand/body) soap in Sri Lanka, but he just seems to sell locally.

I've had a few pucks over the years of this.

Smells strange. Like a generic soap but with the smell of India mixed in. For those that have been, will know what I'm taking about.

As for performance, there are some glowing reviews about. I used this soap for a solid period of time with a view to dialling it in but sadly I felt it to be sub par.

For that generic India soapy scent and to experience how potentially the average Indian man would shave, it's worth a go.

Godrej creams however, brilliant.

Forgot to add, I've been to a division of Godrej's offices, the company is huge and very diversified. Quite an eye opener how they work!

You most certainly correct, when Ardeshir Godrej gave up law to try his hand at other trades and businesses he first turned to lock and safe making. So thats where the symbol of the key comes from. The company he started is now The Godrej Group and is a massive conglomerate. But soaps and locks were the first 2 ventures Ardeshir Godrej turned his hand to. I bet if there were any of his original soaps still around they would be the good vintage type.

They'd be so rare you'de need to lock them up.

Ok the soap arrived today, i've given it a test lather and its very good for such a cheap price. The scent is not bad at all. i'm guessing with a real shave post feel might be a lil drying from the feel I had after washing the lather off.
Next step i'm going to give it two days as i've shaved this morning and see what happens

Did you turn it over to reveal the key? :)
