Gin!?!

A gin martini and a gin and bitters are my favourite alternative to G&T. For special occasions I'll use Hendriks gin, but usually it's either Bombay Sapphire or Tanqueray.

I love a G&T.

But you need a decent Gin and the tonic you use makes a big difference. I like Fevertree tonic, it's not as bitter as Schweppes. And I do prefer a slice of pink grapefruit to lime or lemon.

As mentioned, you need quality ingredients to start with. Greenalls is a pretty bottle, it kinda stops there.
Current favourite is Portobello Road and fever tree, Highball glass, maybe a double shot to a can, three clear cubes of mineral water ice. Ooh, get me! Slice of lemon for the traditionalist. I would recommend Bombay Sapphire as an introduction as it's quite floral, it disguises it's "gin-ness" rather well.
Northam Saint is right about FT, but Schweppes has a unique zing to it.

edit, having drunk gin for a quarter of a century, I've never tried sloe gin. Recommendations?

Not a fan of Gin.at all sorry folks, each to their own..Whiskey or nothing haha. I have only ever tried Gordon's though and some cheaper ones..I like the Gordon's bottle though...it's green so reminds me of Jamesons hahaha!

Hendricks and cucumber here! Also, Tesco do an aromatic gin which is really good! Every year we make sloe gin which warms the cockles on a cold day!

It's worth paying extra for a premium gin IMHO. Tanquerary 10 is the best of the bunch by some distance, using fresh botanicals instead of dried. Avoid diet tonics as the sweeteners can be a bit cloying: either straight Schweppes, or Fever Tree.

If you don't like the classic G&T, try some with pink grapefruit and Fentiman's rose lemonade; or with some St Germain elderflower cordial and soda/tonic/elderflower fizz.

I've had the Aromatic Gin from Tesco before, very nice. Just coming to the end of a bottle of Bulldog which I've enjoyed and would but again.

+1 on the Pink Grapefruit.

Couldn't agree more on the tonic front. Cheap tonic is just that....cheap!
