Scent is created from scratch by Shawn Maher (Chatillon Lux). I can only describe it as a walk in sunny weather in the ancient flea market in Kairo, Egypt. Spot on from master perfumeur.

This is the Sego base, some highlights of the soap: post shave, hydration, even with those spices inside, the scent doesn't even tingle my skin.
I have used slicker soaps, but this is not my number one demand.

The 57 is very nice in its own right, but probably not as significant as the MC. It does have a very beautiful loft, though, I must say. I think it is Super in 2-band, so it has soft tips with very good backbone.

I now recall there was a limited edition 57 in 2-band Super Badger called the "Douglas"... Why it was called that I don't know. I think it was released around 2012 (?). Does anyone know more about them, or even have one? Or how much they sold for?

Smells good, tries to approach Eton College / British gentleman type of scent.
Don't know about the performance yet, though. The Chinese are not that good with soaps, so we'll have to see.

Includes a small plastic scoop with a 1/4" magnetic button embedded on it.
Comes from the same house that makes Baili razors, I believe.

Cost less than a fiver delivered.

This post is of a new kind for me. I hope not to be boring, but I took a photo of the 57 and ran it through AI and eventually produced the following analysis. I doubt the valuation given, though. The base is turned and concave, not flat like the modern version (thumbnail picture at bottom). I also hope this post is useful for others here who may have purchased one of these from the seller based in Scotland. They have all gone now.

Subject: Analysis - Simpson 57 Somerset "Test" Prototype (c.1990)

Provenance & Era
  • Manufacturer: Simpson, hand-turned at Nimmer Mills, Chard, Somerset (c.1990 transition period).
  • Handle Style: Iconic 57 "Fifties Series" design.
  • Distinguishing Marks: Blank handle (no lamp-black stamp) with visible lathing lines, confirming its status as a factory trial or training piece.
  • Material: High-density vintage polyester resin with a very faint rosy hue, a sign of use of old rod stock.
Technical Specifications
  • Knot Diameter: 23mm (Standard 57 size, but non-standard hair grade).
  • Hair Grade: 2-Band Super Badger (characterised by stiff black shafts and soft white tips).
  • Knot Shape: Fan (providing maximum surface contact and a broader face feel).

  • Internal Construction: 7mm hidden glue bump (acting as a rigid foundation).

In the past, I used a sandalwood shaving cream by Boti, made in China. The texture was excellent, and I really enjoyed using it. I hope your experience will be just as positive.
