. It can take a while to dial in how to use a shave stick to its best performance. That mirrors my experience as well. I first used a Muhle silvertip synth, great brush but not enough backbone for use with a shave stick. Then used a Stirling two band synth produced a much more satisfactory experience. Choice of brush and as Randy has already stated getting the correct amount of product on the face is key!.From personal experience in addition, I've found using sticks to create a lather and the success can be down to the choice of brush. I've found brushes with too short a loft, and ones that eat lather to contribute negatively to the outcome - but these are attributes which matter less if I am loading soap from a tub.
My favourite sticks are the classics, Palmolive, Wilkinson & Tabac.
I’ll head over there for a look, thanks!Amazon has very nice shave stick holders, a screw pushes the soap out. They seem sturdy.
I’ll try it Nisse. Thanks. When I started shaving +40 years ago I used stick soap, not sure about brand but it was white with blue base, if I remember correctly rubbing wet brush on stick was the preferred technique loading brush with soap
When you say the smell of your grandmothers purse do you actualy mean her purseP.
you're going straight to hell for that one Paul!
That is just too funny! I remember being 15 and looking at my mother's open purse sitting open on the kitchen table and seeing the pack of cigarettes just begging me to take one and try it. I will never forget the smell of her purse the first time I smelled it. It was the most unique scent I can remember.Speick & La Toja are the slickest, Tabac is the most protective but I can't stand the smell of my grandmother's purse.
I agree. There is no point of grating a stick, because you have to toss the package too. There are plenty of soaps in a tub.I currently have Tabac, Palmolive and Speick all produce a great slick, thick, protective lather. The key for me is to add soap to the face for the same time it takes to load a brush. That ensures you have enough product on your ugly mug before you start to build the lather. Grating did nothing for me, they work well enough as they are meant to. If you are grating it then you may as well just buy a soap in a tub. Try it again and put enough soap on. I agree Tabac can smell pissy if overloaded, it is a Marmite scent but performance isn't far from being unmatched.
Tabac smell never will fade or go milder. It is possessed.I grate my shaving sticks to be able to bowl lather, it is my method since starting straight razor shaving, giving me the best possible control over lather and shave, favourite stick is probably tallow version of Lea (have not tested vegan), Arko is great if it wasn't for the smell, Palmolive will do the job, not impressed by La Toja was probably expecting too much still using it though, Valobra never managed to deliver proper lather so binned, got Tabac stored hoping the smell will go away or at least go milder.
