Would you not agree that whether life is good or bad depends on one's experience? If we are doing well, life is good. Things are better. My grandfather, born in 1910, often said, "the good old days weren't that good". Or, "we were so poor we didn't have a pot to pee in or a window to throw it out". However, life might have been good for others during his youth.
We can, if we want, self educate ourselves about how others live and have lived. I worked with an African American nurse who explained her condition as a child going to Montgomery, Alabama and needing to use the bathroom. Imagine being 12 and the "colored bathroom" being so filthy there was no place to sit. This would have been in 1955 or 70 years ago.
Where I grew up, Juneteenth, was the only time African Americans could go to a park and swim. The next day the city drained the pools and cleaned them. This would. This would have been 60 years ago.
Red lining or "urban renewal" was continuing to take place 50 years ago where 2700 homes were removed within the Black communities to make room for city projects.
I never knew these things were going on because I was a child growing up in the sticks. So, life was good 50 years ago.

I think I now more fully understand why my daughter has sworn off all social media and encouraged me to do the same. What a sad misuse of perfectly good Xs and Os. There's bandwidth we'll never get back. Sadly energy wasted that could have been put to better use testing electric shock therapy on lab rats.

Generally, intolerance eventually leads to having problems with others. Social media brings out the worse and best in people. If everyone needs to think as you do, eventually, you will encounter someone who thinks differently. More and more I read people shouting figuratively, "don't tell me something I don't want to hear".
Also, if you read or hear someone say something and then, without much critical thinking, decide what they said is now your opinion, eventually, you will find you cannot defend yourself because you are actually trying to define someone else who took the time to formulate a stance, whether well formed or not.
Social media has allowed everyone to turn themselves into a know it all. They tell others what they think is a myth and then condescend that they know something or more than someone else. Two people can attend and event and have a completely different experience. Two people could have lived through the '70's and had very different experiences. We lack objectivity and the willingness to understand others and appreciate their perspective.
I abstracted this from an op-ed this morning from one of my favorite writers, " As I write, a book called “The Let Them Theory” is the No. 1 seller on Amazon, a prime example of the genre. The core idea is that you need to release your impulse to manage and improve others and focus on YOU — your own well-being. If somebody’s doing something annoying or judgmental, just let him or her. Before that, there were other on-theme mega-sellers like “Girl, Wash Your Face” and “The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck.”
