Customs and tariffs

Finally collected my Son's bike that we ordered back in September 2020. The bike cost an ADDITIONAL £150!

However the bike shop took the hit for me. It looks like it was a pre-order as the bike was a brand new 2021 model and the price is now £849 on Cubes UK website. When I placed the order the price was £699.
Yea as I suspected. With the pre-order its a tricky one cos the sale of goods or service hasn't actually happened. So the VaT rules will apply like it was purchased post 1st Jan. Good on the store taking the hit. But truth me told they can write it off on their own VaT bill so they won't loose IMO. Glad your boy finally got his bike in the end

Could be possible that the UK having a trade deal with Canada helped also. The UK and EU have no agreed to trade deal yet as I understand it. Neither is there a UK and US trade deal in place yet.

Canada-UK Trade Continuity Agreement (Canada-UK TCA) - Economic Impact Assessment (international.gc.ca)

The types of trade agreements you mention are not for the likes of us citizens but for the large companies importing and exporting high volumes of goods. This seems really odd that it flew under the radar of royal mail and HMRC

I don’t think that’s the case as it would be almost impossible to differentiate between large and small businesses and individuals. If there is a trade agreement in place with Canada why would it not apply to one-off purchases?

Could you check for me if the CN22 on the package was signed?

I am guessing what items are considered to be having duty or whatever owing and at what rate applies to any goods no matter who imports them. If none of that is owing then you get hit with what we would call the sales tax/VAT of the country the goods are inbound to subject to amount limits set by the inbound country. Those amount limits could be different for the public vs businesses. For me the only odd thing might be that the total value escaped the VAT being added. All that is subject to what is in any trade agreement between two countries.

The trade agreement in question specifically refers to business tariffs for import and export in to UK relating to business to business. The laws and legislation relating to citizens does not allow us to benefit from any of those In the said trade agreement... more specifically we are not bringing in products in valves that tariffs would come into play. It's really simple, if you live in the uk and buy anything from ANY other country and the total consignment is over £135 you are by law meant to pay VAT and Import duty as a minimum. If the consignment also contains alcohol or perfumes then you'll be required to pay excise duty as well. Trust me when I say i've read and understood the legislation very thoroughly and my statements are not guess work.
Mw guess is that the process in picking up the consignments which require the extra duty being paid is not working or that the CN22 was not signed so cannot be actioned to collect the TAX.
