Pass Around Coming soon - Tatara titanium pass around (Masamune/Nodachi)

I had the stainless Masamune on loan a while back and i think the extra weight benefits the razor. As with a lot of lighter weight razors it's easy to subconsciously apply pressure to the head because of the perceived lack of weight, which can lead to razor burn. Once you adapt to the weight of the Ti and find the combination of blade gap and and exposure that works for you, it gives a cracking shave.

Here's the stainless Masamune....

Cheers for the link. It’s hard to know if titanium is justified, no doubting it’s quality however. Perhaps a more luxury feel rather than a difference in performance.

First shave was on Monday and a pretty quick one where the Masamune OC (with Masamune top cap) faced off with the Aylsworth Drakkant OC. Also shaved
The Drakkant OC won it, being as smooth as the Masamune OC, but more efficient. I also shaved my shoulders with them, the difference being a bit more pronounced. The latter razor struggled a fair bit there, getting clogged quite easily. A little surprising for an OC plate, and I probably won't use it again.
At the same time, I think it was a bit unfair toward the Masamune OC, as it was my first outing with it, and my fourth with a Drakkant head.

Just now, I finished a shave where, on my face, I used the Masamune top cap with both SB base plates, one for the left side of my face and one on the right.
Surprisingly, there wasn't really much of a difference in efficiency between the two, though the Nodachi plate had a slight upper hand.
The Masamune plate, however, was smoother. Out of curiosity, for the last ATG pass on my cheeks with this plate, I paired it with the Nodachi top cap and it felt just as smooth as the stock Masamune top cap, but it was a little easier for me to tell where the blade was.

I also pitted both plates against the Nodachi OC plate on my chest, as I wanted to give them more of a challenge.
Unsurprisingly, the Nodachi OC had them beat in efficiency, and although both SB plates fared OK using a plough-like technique (which I use all the time anyway), some hair managed to get trapped in the lather slot, which wasn't a problem with the OC plate.
Switching top caps with the Nodachi OC plate didn't yield any difference in efficiency, but it was a bit more comfortable with the Masamune top cap.

One other things to note - I used Mastro Miche B-Owl shaving soap and I think I'll have to pass it on. It's strongly perfumed and my skin seems to be irritated by it (though perhaps not by the perfume but by one of the ingredients) more than by razors.

The Dorco Titan blades are just OK for me, so I might opt for something else next time.

I think I'm going to compare the Nodachi OC plate with the Masamune top cap against another OC or the Masamune SB plate with the Nodachi top cap against the Henson Al13 v2 +++ next.

On Wednesday
Comparing the Nodachi OC plate with Nodachi top cap and iKon's Shavecraft 103.
Much like I remember from comparison shaves from the time when I owned this Nodachi head in stainless steel, the 103 was a touch more aggressive, but just as smooth, if not smoother.
Other than that, it was a draw after three passes. Nicks on the usual spots (see notes later on).

Today
Nodachi OC plate with Masamune top cap vs Homelike Start 0.90mm OC.
This was an interesting one - At first, the Start appeared to be smoother and more efficient, but I used the Tatara head after I've performed three passes with the Start and on the first ATG pass it was clear that the Dorco Titan went from fresh to bin-worthy during the shave.
Swapped it for another fresh one, and the rest of the shave was fine. I also performed a few additional touch-ups on the Start side, as the old blade left a few patches, which I wrongly attributed to me having trouble keeping the angle with the razor.
After that, both sides were about even, both in closeness, efficiency and smoothness of both razors.

Notes
Lately, I seem to have been nicking myself in the same spots, but couldn't really see or feel anything there, until today, when I realised that there's a curiously bumpy bit of skin under my adam's apple before I shaved, and similarly so near my mouth and on/very near my chin, on the very nick spots.
I reckon it's time I tighten up my diet, in case it's related, and go to a dermatologist later if it wouldn't help.
Some of this might've been due to me having a bit of a reaction to the Masto Miche B-Owl soap, which is really strongly perfumed, too, so I'll see how I'll fare in a few days.

I think I'll steer clear of the Dorco Titans from now on - it isn't the first time I one of the blade became practically blunt during a shave, although it was more obvious during today's shave for some reason.

So far, I think I'm kind of tempted to buy the Nodachi OC base plate and Masamune top cap should they be on sale again.
I'll ponder this again next year, I suppose.
I'm a little fence on titanium - the head is perhaps even too light for my taste, so I think I'd go for the steel one.

Hi Matt,
I am struggling to rotate what i have at present, therefore has decided to give up my place in this brilliant pass-around.
Thanks for the opportunity.

It looks like I forgot to post results from my last shave with it.

It was the Nodachi SB with Masamune top cap vs the Yaqi Sentinel I have on loan from @p.b (and will be returning it soon).
I had to swap the Dorco Titan for a fresh blade after a couple of strokes. It lasting only one shave, is not great.
Having said that, the fresh blade performed well.
The Tatara head was smoother and a bit more pleasant, but the Sentinel was a little more efficient. This might've been because the Sentinel had more blade feel, although I think it also has a nearly neutral blade exposure.
There's one trouble spot on the side of my neck under the jaw that is a bit tricky to get and the Sentinel got it a bit more easily, though the Tatara head got there with a few more strokes, and a touch more comfort.

They're fine razors both. I think I prefered the comfort of the Tatara head, though.

Thanks for letting me participate in the passaround, it's been fun trying the razor combinations. :D
