Coffee Grinders

I bought the Melitta Molino, seeing as it was on offer on Amazon.

Nice compact grinder, faster than the KG79, with about the same volume and when looking at the grinding discs, they look identical to those used in the KG79.
The melitta does not appear to grind as fine as the KG79 though. Maybe I was lucky with the KG79 and got one that ground finer than usual. The resulting Espresso with the Melitta grind pours more quickly, but I still get I nice enough crema and I'm sure it will do the job just fine.
I will experiment with the load of the grinds and tamp a little...

I like manual hand grinders. My main is an HG One, but I have a Feldgrind and a Hausgrind too. I've previously owned the Rossco Mini, Pharos, and Lido-E. In all honesty, the Feldgrind is good enough for me. I could probably cope with just that, especially now I stopped drinking espresso, and only drink brewed.

The golden boy of the moment seems to be the Niche Zero, but I think the Eureka Mignon is well thought of and regularly available for a reasonable price second hand. Since the Niche hit the scene, I've seen some nice grinders sold off at fair prices on coffeeforums.co.uk
Seconded on the hand grinders. I own a Lido-E which I use mainly for pourover but it can do espresso pretty well too. With regards to hand grinders, they grind much faster, have better grinding burrs and provide a more consistent grind than a hario skerton which I have used before, e.g. grinding ~35g of coffee at a pourover grind size would take me a couple of minutes on a hario skerton but takes 30 seconds on a Lido E

Hope it does the job for you, but if you ever get a coffee grinder acquisition disorder or just want to experiment with hand grinders, the premium hand grinders such as the Lido/feldgrind/kinu m47/helor 101 are all great. There are differences between them (with regards to hopper capacity, materials, cost, ease of cleaning/adjusting) and which one you pick comes to personal preference (I happened to choose the Lido E because I got one on sale for cheap and it has the largest grinding capacity out of the aforementioned grinders, which is great for me as I frequently make coffee for many people at once), but in terms of grind quality they are very similar.

The Melitta is a pile of shite. It has just decided to grind too coarse for Espresso. I've tried re-shimming it but grind is still too coarse. If you are in the market for an electric grinder avoid the Melitta.

Back to a Delonghi I think.

Forum GOD!
As I said earlier in the thread, just get a Mazzer Major and finish with it. 83mm titanium burrs, fast as hell, good value used. Mine was £200. I modified mine to on-demand which wasn't too hard with some DIY. I used to hang out on Coffee Forums for a year and got all the knowledge there. Plenty of threads on modifying Mazzers, and even more stuff on YT. I use mine three times a day and it's just pure satisfaction all the way.

A few years ago, I bought a Lidl juice blender. Anyhow, I used it one day to grind up some coffee but not with the grinder blade! Instead I used the normal 4 blade.
8 to 10 seconds and my bean choice is done. Now I Only use it to make coffee or Icing sugar :). Best €25 spent in kitchen.

We plan to buy a bean to cup machine in the near future (well as soon as move house) so I don't want to invest too much in a grinder. As such, I have ordered another De'Longhi KG79. I'll shim it to get a little finer grind when it arrives.

Holy poop, how slow are these hand grinders! I'll need a weeks notice to prepare to make a coffee!
Depends which hand grinders you use. The Harios/porlexes etc will take a while to grind. If you go for the Kinu m47, Lido, helor, feldgrind etc they take 20 seconds to grind 18g for brew, 40 seconds-to-just under a minute for espresso grinds.

I'd try a higher-end hand grinder tbh, it's the most bang for your buck and most of them can grind anything from turkish/espresso to french press/cold brew grind size with good consistency

I'm starting to think I may have a poor batch of beans. The Melitta grinder was OK then started grinding too coarse. I sent it back and got a Delonghi, which I used to have and it ground fine enough for Espresso (for me); this Delonghi is also grinding too coarse, even shimming it. I'll await a new batch of beans and see how I get on...

Was about to give up with the Delonghi, just wasn't grinding fine enough. The last one used to be fine (geddit!). Bought new beans, no difference. Was just about to send it back and thought I'd try a thicker shim. RESULT!

And the Espresso:

Just shows that every machine is different... as the last Delonghi couldn't take a this shim as the Burrs caught...
