Cheese.. Do you imbibe?

It's surprisingly difficult to find aged English cheddar here in England, most shops only have the non-specific "extra mature" the flavour and texture of which can vary immensely. That said, the last time I went to an actual cheese shop the lady working there mentioned that someone had bought some of their vintage cheddar and had come back to complain that it "had bits in it". The "bits" were little salt crystals which are the hallmark of good cheddar. They sold a lot of the mild cheddar which is akin to eating rubber, I despaired.
I have found a great cheddar cheese in one of the local grocery stores that has the attributes you described. It is Kerrygold reserve cheddar aged over 2 years made in Ireland. It is white, crumbles when you cut it, is a bit crunchy when you eat it and has a sharp tangy taste to it. As long as we can get it, it will be in our house.

One of the pleasures in life is going to a farmers market with a choice of many cheeses, some even have taster packs of 20 cheeses, they are a world away from the plastic wrapped soap from supermarkets.

Double Gloucester is a favourite.

That, unfortunately, is not the typical farmers market found here locally.

One of those small pleasures in life is to have a short drive to a proper outdoor market, spend the day walking round meeting stallholders like this

There is no such thing as a short drive around here. You have to go 400 mi/640 km east or west of us to find a Canadian city of similar or greater size.

Bob, thanks for the suggestion. I’ve tried three English Coast cheddars recently. All were very good, two were outstanding! Enjoy :)

Would the Coastal one pictured in the link be one of the outstanding ones?
