Cheap Brush is still my favorite, how could this be?

I just really like Synths. I have got a few decent Badgers which were gifted to me and a Boar brush or two, but since using a Synth i have never looked back really.

In fact, this thread prompted me to tick something off the wish list and i just today ordered a Yaqi 24MM Sagrada Familia from their AliExpress shop !!
They are great performers, built well and look good too. The value is outstanding. I have a 22mm and have been eyeing the 24mm too, you know... just in case!

I was going through my stash and found this brush, which i can't remember buying. It would have likely been bought around 2018 and it appears to be a synthetic. My best guess is i picked it up in a UK department store, but i can't remember and it has no markings at all! Will give it a spin and see how it drives.

:bravo:Break it in Baby!

Breaking in a Boar Brush like Frank Sinatra, doing it my way.

Thought I would ask this question as a how do you break in a New Boar Brush, or how have you done it, and then share my, this is how I do it method.

Long ago before the Internet, Shaving Forums, and no one around to set you straight about Shaving Brush Break-in, we just purchased a Shave Brush at local Drug Store, and used it. Somehow we survived, Brush broke-in, but some Brush’s did not because we did not respect the cheap tool. Did not rinse old Soap out, left Bristle down in Shaving Bowl, or just abused the cheap tool.

Today with the Internet, Shaving Internet Forums, simple things involved in Wet Shaving, like how to break in Boar Brush become very complicated at times

Some believe best first step to Boar Break-in is to set Bristles into container filled with fresh Musk Ox Milk from the far reaches or North America, Alaska, Canada, or Greenland because of the secret properties in Musk Ox Milk.

This is. Best done over night on a night with Full Moon, for best results. Then you got those who say you got to do 24 - 48 hours in Water inside your refrigerator, and the list goes on.

Some people do First Lather on Hand to Work First Lather into Bristles before every using brush to Shave with, and, everyone has their secret method, and it comes down to what works best for you.

**Let me say recently read on a Wet Shave Forum, this gentleman give advise who isa in BRUSH BUSINESS, long term soaking to Break in has been know to and will CRACK SOME BRUSH HANDLES. I took the advice, noted it, as I do not wan t to ruin a $5.00 Boar Brush, or another other Brush!

Also will say some New Animal Hair Brushes, Stink from Funk at first, as you use, soap, use, the Animal Hair get cleaned with you Shave Soap or Cream…FUNK goes bye bye in time.

First off let me say my old tried & true method with a New Omega 10019, that is a Non Bleach Bristle, Price Point, aka CHEAP Boar Brush I bought NEW under $5.00.

1. Removed Remove from Plastic Package.

2. Run Brush’s Bristle's under Tap Water about 5 minutes. Warm is what I did but Cold would also work to WET BRISTLES. Option II, is to Soak Bristle in Water about FIVE MINUTES in a Glass, Tea orc Coffee Cup or Glass.

3. Pretended the Brush has Soap on it, and then Lather my Hand for could have 2-3 minutes, with stream of water hitting Bristles, after they were soaked.

4. Now used the Brush, with Real Soap, Lather Face, and Shaved.

5, Post Shave rinse brush until water it was clear, using my Palm to help the process, pretend in was apply Lather. Again until Water Runs Clear.

6. Next I shook out Excess water from Bristles. One good snap of wrist and mission accomplished.

7. Now I used Thumb and Four Fingers to squees Bristles to remove excess water. Like I was Miking a Cow with one Soft/ Medium Pressure Squeeze. We are not trying to g to end a chicken life, so we can eat it.

8. Now I Rubbed Clean Brush on Clean Towel in Circles going Clock then Counter Clock Wise, then Back and Forth (like on a Compass, North to South several times, then East To West a Couple of times motions, and the Brush is almost dry now. This is like 60-4180 seconds of work.

9. Hang Brush, and is survived breaking in, and use number one. Yes I have cheap Brush Stand that was like $5.00.

Results were Brush Bloomed, Ends Split with Use, and Bore Brush Tips got soft, and only lost a few Bristles to date. As Brush is used more and more it becomes Softer, and Bloom increases.

If you. Never own a Boar Brush, Omega makes good price point Boars Brush, selection is many styles under $13.00 M.S.R.P. from Large to Small Brushes Sizes, and configurations.

This is how I do it, and it works for me. BTW the Musk Ox Milk was a Joke only, but it might be in someone Break-in Method living in Far, Far North America or Alaska?

Just use it.

This Zenith is a thick knot as compared to my other brushes except for the mixed badger boar. You could prop it up and stand it upright on the bristles. It is that thick. There remains a faint odor, but that might be @chazt .....LOL!! :D :D
I have an Atomic Rocket the I got from PAA years ago for $12. I've always been pleased with it.

The argument over expensive badger vs cheap boar, EJ 89 vs stainless exotica, Proraso vs MdC etc has certainly been around since I found my first shaving forum and has probably been around for as long as shaving fora have been a thing.

It's just VI vs EMACS all over again.
That's why you always make sure the MdC is full of soap 😁

Well been using the Omega - Connaught - Same a Jade but in Ivory - 011911 Boar Brush several weeks, acquired used, but had little use. Tips were almost Virgin, not Split. This is my #2 Boar, the OMEGA 10019 ism favorite.

Brush has now split out it ends so it is time to add my $0.02 on this Brush, please note the ONLY SOAP I have used with the Brush \ is PAA’s CK-6 Vegan soap.

Positives:

Very Nice Resin Handle

Brush feel good in hands, and does not Slip & Slide

Brush has not Shaded Fibers only loosing a Few in 14 days. As I said the Brush might have been used 2-3 time before I got it.

Brush Broken with easy, and Fibers Splitting Ends no problems.

Brush construction is good overall.

Cons/Negatives:

Brush is floppy

Backbone is Fair but not Great

Splay is easy, would personally like Stiffer for better Scrubbing, hard to Splay.

Brush might be better if it was Packed with more Bristles. But that is JMHO.

Conclusions.

Brush is a keep consider the positives, and negatives. Other good News is Connaught is again shipping to the U.S.A. so if you want one of their exclusive Boar’s by Omega in Ivory, or Jade it’s available to you at this time.

I agree with most of what you say about the Omega Ivory except for the floppy part. My example is definitely not floppy, which on some level goes to your point about the variability between different batches. Although I suspect you just may prefer more backbone than me. However, also consider that perhaps Omega uses a particular grade of bristle in this brush that’s inherently different, i.e., “floppier” in comparison to your preferred, stiffer 10019 knot. I don’t know for sure, just thinking out loud, but it’s possible. Before my current brush I had a Jade version (which I PIFfed with some Tabac). The knots were similar but not identical. Over time now, the Ivory has broken in more to my liking than the Jade did. While I do own a few other boar brushes, more and less expensive, the Omega Ivory is my favorite bristle brush :smug:.

This Zenith is my clear #2.
Ranked third among my boar brushes is the bleached SOC.

It’s semi interesting to me that I prefer the unbleached knots. Years ago I never would have touched an unbleached boar brush.

Boar Hair varies from Brush to Brush, it is also effected by DONOR ANIMALS DIET, where they live, like Altitude, Climate, or if they are Domestic, or Wild Pigs.

Honestly if I had to choose between keep Ivory boar, or PAA Moon Striker it would be the PAA.
