Pass Around Carbon CX-316L including two new base plates

I'm a little bit late with my update as I saved with the razor again on Monday evening and compared the ++ baseplate directly with the standard baseplate in a side by side test.

The ++ baseplate definitely feels more more efficient (as would be expected) than the normal baseplate and (surprisingly) did feel at tad smoother in use. I've experienced this with other razors before (a Timeless 0.95 vs 0.68 and a Fatip Lo Storto Originale vs Gentile slant spring readily to mind) so the Carbon is not alone in this respect.

I must say that I have been really impressed with this baseplate and am looking forward to trying the + plate tomorrow evening. :)

I had a shave with the + plate earlier. It gave a nice, trouble free, smooth shave. There’s not much more I can say about it really as it was totally drama free.

The next shave will be to compare it with the normal plate and this will then be followed with a comparison shave between the + and ++ plates. 🙂

I compared the + plate with the standard plate last night and must admit that I really struggled to find that much of a difference between them, other than the + plate having a hairs breadth more efficiency (although I'm still unsure as to whether this difference could be accounted for by the psychological factor of my telling myself that there must be a difference between the two). This surprised me somewhat. Both shave well, but the clear winner for me so far is the ++ plate.

I'm having to wait 2 to 3 days between shaves at the moment (as any of the plates would be too much for me to use on a daily basis), so I have one final shave scheduled for Wednesday evening and then the razor will be posted out to @p.b on Thursday. :)

I had my final shave with the various baseplates this evening, when I compared the + and ++ plates directly for the first two passes and finished up with the normal plate on a 3rd pass.

I'm still of the opinion that the ++ plate is smoother of the three plates. I'm not sure that I could use it as a daily driver, though, as it's just too efficient for it to feel comfortable in that role for me. I could definitely see me using it regularly with 3 to 4+ days worth of stubble if I were to purchase one at some stage.

The normal plate is definitely usable on a more frequent basis and this leaves me with the problem of where I would fit a + plate into my routine. It sits in no mans land for me. It's too efficient for frequent use and is not as smooth as the ++ plate. I'm not sure I would ever purchase one if truth be told, as I could happily not only get by, but also enjoy using the normal and ++ plates regularly.

A big thank you again to @Nishy and @CarbonShavingCo for organising this pass around. I've really enjoyed testing this razor and, everything going well, it should be winging its way over to Paul tomorrow. :)

The Carbon has landed - thank you @ajc347 I loaded up a fresh blade in the ++ plate for tomorrow and saw the blade gap, bottled it, and switched the + plate. That's quite a bit gap there!

Personally, I wouldn't read anything in to that gap, Paul. The ++ plate has minimal blade feel and pretty docile.
