Completed Bigelow-Parkin Folding DE Razor pass around

OK. The Bigelow. Sounds like a character from some modern children's fairytale and looks like one of those puzzles you get in a mid range xmas cracker.

Popped in a once used Nacet and away we went. First pass on a three day growth was easy and efficient although I did pick up a significant weeper on the cheek which is most unusual. I think it is all about angle of dangle here. It is SO easy to take the head off of the 90 degree imaginary handle line. The advice given earlier about using it as an extension of a locked forearm is good and makes sense. 2nd pass not so great. I think I was being over attentive to angles by then and this caused issues. Persevered though and got a decent shave which I finished with the trusty 6s to go BBS to the end. Top lip was a big issue. NO WAY was I going Against with this thing. Did ok with on the first pass though and managed across ok too.

Would I buy one?. No of course I wouldn't but the novelty value here is good and I will be happy to give it a couple more runs before I send it on. As mentioned by others, it is a delightful little object and a nice piece of history. Love the way the finger holds protect the blade when folded. have to be careful on opening though . A collector's delight. Good for travelling also but the blade would always be the issue if not in the hold.

Big thanks to @sɐǝɹpu∀ for the opportunity.

This razor is going on a mini pass-around to @culcreuch, so I thought I give others the opportunity to join in. In case you missed the last pass-around three years ago.

The razor is not - I repeat - not scary. It's quite easy to use if you lock your wrist and use your lower arm as one long handle. That's the only secret.

Here is how it works:
View from the top with the little grip handles folded in. Note the star-shaped holes - they give more grip than round ones or handles without holes would.

The handles fold out:

View from the bottom. You open the razor by lifting the base plate where it says Open here:

Then you put a blade in ...

close the base plate and fold out the handles fully. Pick up the razor with thumb and index finger and you're ready to go.

My interactive version of the 1921 patent for this razor can be found here.

If you are new to pass arounds read this first.
Anyone?

  1. culcreuch
  2. You?
The list is open.
