It has no capacity to sting or cause irritation...even if you've just overdone it with too big a blade gap or whatever. Earlier today I did rub and scrape a bit too enthusiastically but the No.4 soothed it nicely...and just as an experiment I then sploshed some ordinary after shave on...and it stung like hell. Not a problem coz we know that does happen...but the Bay Rum just doesn't give that sharp intake of breath...it's just gorgeous.

Kindly received my bay rum on Friday. Thank you again Greg. I wanted to give it a good run out before reviewing. So after 3 uses, I really like the scent profile. To my nose it has aspects of Benjamin's bay rum in the smoke and cutting bay, as well as aspects of my favourite, Ogallala lime and peppercorn bayrum. I detect almost a zesty note which stops the smoke and straight bay from becoming linear. Being an a/s it doesn't last long, which is a given with most, but as a good aftershave does, it leaves the skin feeling refreshed and calm. Definitely would buy this, decent stuff. I found like most other bayrum, it needs to be thoroughly shaken before use, otherwise it can leave a tacky feel, probably the glycerine component.

Big Boar hasn't logged in for a couple of weeks but I know he's a busy man and will have 'real life' to contend with. I hope he'll be back online as soon as time and circumstances allow.

He's got another brew in hand which he'll be seling and was destined for despatch in February. I've been using his Bay Rum No.4 sparingly and have some left. For sure, I could easily have used it all up, plus another two bottles as well but knowing I'm not going to get my hands on some more for a while I'm treating it as a luxury.

Notwithstanding the above, has anyone (ideally anyone who has used BB's Bay Rum, that is) got any suggestions for an alternative for use in the meantime that is along the same lines that would keep me going until Greg is able to fulfill my desires? Ideally something that can be had in the UK.

I see occasional mentions of Kramperts, Ogallala, Pinaud,and Benjamins, not to mention the Boot's one and wonder whether to go for one of them. I have the Pinaud Special Reserve and am very fond.

I used some of BB bay rum yesterday, after my shave. It is lovely. Definitely a more zesty bay rum, at least to my nose.

It is good stuff isn't it, pity he's not around, I'm sure he'd sell a few bottles if he were to knock some up...

Yh I can't fault it. Definitely would be interested in buying a brew! Perhaps one with a bit of a sting.

I did make a couple of batches of BR.... the recipe must be somewhere here. It wasn't remotely cheap by the time you've bought all the ingredients. Did it during a period of obsession when I had to acquire several different Bay Rums. Must admit one or other does get used every day though, either mine or one of the purchased ones. I did doctor mine with menthol... it is actually well and truly doctored - there's a shed load of gear in it, but having said that it gives me pleasure and makes me look and smell like George Clooney. (OK, I lied about that).

Was also able get hold of some home made stuff made by members (either here or the other place). All was nice.

My favourite shop bought could be the Clubman Virgin Island Bay Rum and my least favourite might be the Bello, from Germany, (both with and without Lime). The Pashana American Bay Rum is really nice too, and not vastly expensive... and the Pashana Portugal, with oil, isn't at all unpleasant although not strictly Bay Rum.

Edit. Just spotted that my recipe is in fact in the thread mentioned.

Just had a look in the cupboard and I still have a bottle Big Boars BR along with a flask of Krampert's and an un-opened bottle of Barbershop rum.....(lets hope it matures with age !!
I love the scent of all 3 of them, time to start using them as the weather is cooling down ......
