Best Budget Safety Razor

Beginners razor? Well you will not find a better choice than the Rockwell 2C. Easily adjustable, cheap and readily available. If I were starting again I'd want someone to put me on to a Rockwell. If someone recommended an R41 I'd be soon cursing them that's for sure.
A Rockwell is certainly easily adjustable. When the zamak handle disintegrates, which it will do sooner or later (read all the posts on the subject), the handle will spin round and round, round and round, round and round, round and round......

Just put on some fairground music and you can go round and round with it.

Why's that Steve?
I have never had anything but a cheese-grater shave from an R41. I've have had one since I started, and have never had a comfortable shave. One of those YMMV truisms. If it works for you and @les24preludes, then you're one of the lucky ones. No amount of cream, soap, pre-shave, shower-prep, or blade choice helps. Oh well.

I think it's more the case that you're one of the unlucky ones, Steve. Shame you don't enjoy it. The handle has a lot to do with it. I've always fitted a much better handle than the original one which went straight on the shelf.

It's a beginner razor though so it will do perfectly well until whoever buys it gets the hang of Wet Shaving. They can then move on to something more robust that will last a lifetime or two. It's cheap enough that no one will grieve for it if the handle does become damaged.

Mine disintegrated within weeks of getting it off a guy. Rockwell weren't interested in the email I sent them. I've read getting on for a dozen posts from shavers whose Rockwell disintegrated. I wouldn't touch one after my brief flirtation with it. Easily the worst experience I've ever had with a razor. Not the SS one of course, but that's not that cheap.

I use the 'Twist' variant for the R41 and R89. Longer handle, more robust. R41 and I don't have much to say to one another.

I'm sorry to hear that, mine is still going strong after a couple of years though admittedly it isn't in daily use.

I had the 'C' version, (as well as the SS). I wasn't that impressed with them, and sold them within 3 days. I can't justify having a razor with 6 settings when I'm only going to keep it on setting '2'. My Progress is the same. I've had it since Christ was a corporal, and I've never taken it off '2'.

My handle was disintegrated too. I emailed them, they sent another one, no questions asked.

I had a minor blemish on a too cap when first bought it, they replaced it too, no questions asked again.

The second version of the handle is more sturdy and twists smoothly into the threads of the top cap. I always use a drop of baby oil after use though just in case.

Indeed I had those shaves with it. It's the blade Steve and the angle too. The blade exposure is such, that if the blade is not sharp enough to go through the beard, then the cheese grater thing happens.

The angle with it must be more than 30°.
Don't give up, it will shave better. Put inside a Med Prep for start.

You can do better than a Feather? I will try, but I've experimented with about half a dozen contenders, and I've got eight razors in my rota that never let me down. Muhle R84RS, R89, R94, R95, Merkur 39C, Progress 510, and two EJ razors -- same great closed comb heads. If I never pick up the R41 again, I'm not going to be missing anything.

Hell all! I am new here and I don't know if this qualifies as one of the best budget razors but I just got a stainless steel Wilkinson Sword Classic Shave metal handle DE for $20 with a 5-pack of blades and as a beginner I am quite pleased! They're easy to find too!
