Bay Rum: Back to Basics

With further benefit of hindsight (which, as we know, is a wonderful thing) maybe I shouldn't have used the wife's peppercorns as they were dated 2011. Clearly I've severely admonished the good lady for keeping such outdated culinary foodstocks in the house. I now see there's such a thing a Rainbow Peppercorn. It looks very much more colourful than plain old black - and I saw someone say that the red ones are very similar to Bay.

I'll get some next time I or we go into town.

What, actually, does Peppercorn add to the equation?

Oh, by the way, the Bay EO arrived. Obviously I added it within seconds of unwrapping it but I have to say it doesn't seem that powerful. I added 40 drops.

Next to arrive will be the Lime EO which will be here soon. Then the Vetivert EO, but not as promptly as it's coming from China or somesuch far away place (I saw it on an Ebay auction and bid £1.50 and paid £1.20 including postage from all that way away .... how do they do that?)

The Bay and the Lime EOs arrived. In addition to them I added 10 drops of Tea Tree oil too. The latter was inspired by a sample of Extro Bay Rum received today - it's very nice albeit very different from the standard Bay Rum smell and seems to be available from Shaving Station.

My first step into this world. I'm planning to start with some Benjamins Bay Rum, and use that as a base then make up a couple of concoctions. Just need to wait for the Benjamins to arrive...

I've also started a blend based on rum. If it comes good I'll reveal ingredients.

Anyone got any updates on their home-made Bay Rum ventures? (my second batch is into it's third week of infusion and looking uneventful).

Mine is now bottled and I'm using it regularly. Quite impressed with it. It's going to last for ages.

I'm not shaving much this year but I do enjoy a good splash of Bay Rum after coming out of the shower ... my tea-based Bay Rum with cade and all sorts of earthy goodies really is right up my street! Like Laphroaig splash!

I've since put a few drops of Birch Tar EO and Indian Patchouli EO in - the Indian Patchouli is ever so slightly minty; really refreshing as well as very earthy. I wanted that little hint of Majmoua in there but not the paan sweetness.

Now dubbed 'The Pirate Queen', it's a personal best

Any recommended links to the EOs ? I see plenty of references to Birch Tar EO ... sounds fascinating and a new one on me.

Is Indian Patchouli different to "ordinary" Patchouli? I have the latter but not sure if it's the one you mean.

Indian Patchouli is somehow mintier and quite refreshing ... I got mine from oudh.co.uk. The Birch Tar came from Nikura (who also do a good Cade and a lovely Cedarwood).
